Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)
About the Project
Air pollution is a global challenge, contributing to millions of deaths each year and producing an economic impact in excess of £1 Tn per annum. Part of the solution to air quality comes from improved fundamental understanding, prioritisation and protocol verification, aided substantially by space-based monitoring. New systems for accurate mapping of pollution are under continuous development. This project focuses on novel advances in nano-sat constellation concepts which may allow unprecedented detail to be revealed and state-of-the-art measurements from the Sentinel 5-precursor mission.
Funding Notes
This studentship is one of a number of fully funded studentships available to the best UK and EU candidates available as part of the NERC DTP CENTA consortium.
For more details of the CENTA consortium please see the CENTA website: www.centa.org.uk.
Applicants must meet requirements for both academic qualifications and residential eligibility: http://www.nerc.ac.uk/skills/postgrad/
Please direct informal enquiries to the project supervisor. If you wish to apply formally, please do so via: http://www2.le.ac.uk/study/research/funding/centa/how-to-apply-for-a-centa-project
References
Interested parties are recommended to research air quality monitoring from space, and in particular the Sentinel 5 Precursor mission and the TropOMI instrument (http://www.tropomi.eu/instrument).
Details of the new nano-satellite constellation concept are not publically available at this time, and therefore general reading on NO2 retrieval theory is recommended. General information on the air quality group at the University of Leicester can be found at www.leos.le.ac.uk/aq.
