PhD: Economic assessment of risks and uncertainty in new energy technology Investments

Significant investment will be needed in future integrated energy systems. However, there are risks and uncertainties associated with the technologies, policies, prices, market evolution, weather and climate associated with energy system integration (ESI) that can have a substantial effect on financial performance and the timing of investments. The project team in economics and finance will develop models of energy investment that consider the inherent risk and uncertainty of integrated energy system technologies. The PhD student in economics will assist in the development of and apply these models to assess the costs of new energy technologies, different hedging and support strategies, and policies to mitigate these risks and achieve socially-optimal levels of integrated energy system investment.
PhD details: The PhD researcher will complete a PhD in the Energy institute of UCD. The PhD funded duration is up to four years, with a student stipend (tax free) of €18,000 per annum. Additionally, standard tuition fees, project related materials and travel will be provided, as agreed with the PhD supervisor.

Applicants from a variety of backgrounds will be considered for this position, for example economics, behavioural economics, finance and other relevant disciplines, and with an interest in energy economics. Key criteria are as follows:
1. Applicants should have a strong background in various research methods, both quantitative and qualitative
2. Strong statistical data analysis skills.
3. Strong communication and academic writing skills
