About the Project

The research will investigate the efficiency and effectiveness of current institutional arrangements in the area of road safety management. The aim is to identify how objectives are defined, agreed and met in the development of a road safety programme (effectiveness) and thereafter how resources are allocated to activities planned to effect a road safety programme (efficiency). The project will involve collecting information from the literature on the above area, developing a questionnaire that address key institutional development issues, delivering the questionnaire to a number of countries, collecting information and analysing it with regard to identify the major issues that facilitate or impede road safety management plans in road institutions in the countries concerned.

Career overview

Dr Harry Evdorides obtained a Dipl. Ing. in Civil Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece. He joined the Highways Group in 1990 as a research student and was awarded a PhD in Civil Engineering in 1994 for his research on ''A Prototype Knowledge-Based System for Pavement Analysis''. Following this, he worked as a research fellow at the University of Birmingham on various R&D projects and was awarded the title of EurIng (FEANI) in 2000. In 2002, he was appointed as a lecturer in Road Asset Management and became the Convenor of the MSc Road Management and Engineering Programme. Dr Evdorides has represented the University at the International Road Federation (IRF) since 2003 and established the MSc Roads and Public Policy in 2004. In 2008, he took on the role of Acting Programme Manager of the Department of Civil Engineering and became the leading academic of the Accident Research Group. His main research interests include highway asset management and engineering, and he has participated in numerous research projects related to pavement analysis and road safety. Dr Evdorides has supervised various MPhil/PhD and MSc projects, focusing on topics such as road data reliability and sustainable pavement management. He has received the Telford Premium from the Institution of Civil Engineers in 1997 for his contributions to the field.

Research interests

Dr Evdorides'' main research interests lie in highway asset management and engineering. He has participated in various research projects, including structural evaluation of road pavements, development of expert systems for pavement analysis, and investigation of the usage of Finite Elements for Falling Weight Deflectometer data analysis. His work also encompasses road pavement performance modelling, the Road Infrastructure Maintenance Evaluation Study (RIMES), the ARMBUILD – Tempus TACIS programme, and road safety and accident-related data analysis through TRACE and CCIS projects. Additionally, he focuses on pavement design for developing countries. Dr Evdorides has supervised numerous MPhil/PhD and MSc projects, with topics including road data reliability, pavement performance prediction, sustainable pavement management, pavement design, genetic algorithms and multi-criteria analysis for road works programming, road cracking modelling, data integrity, and road data collection strategies.
