About the Project
Imagine being able to power your smartphone or iPod by your jacket?
E-textiles integrate clothing with electronics to create smart fabrics. Sophisticated e-textiles require wearable energy-storage capabilities. The aim of this project is to fabricate functional yarns using nanomaterials, which will power clothing equipped for wearable computing, wearable sensing and remote monitoring.
We are seeking a highly motivated excellent researcher to join our multidisciplinary project – “Advanced fibre-based energy storage for wearable applications”. In addition to state of the art training in materials synthesis and functionalisation (monomer, polymer, nanostructured carbon, metal-nanoparticle), we facilitate multidisciplinary training and advanced physicochemical characterisation (SEM, TEM, AFM, XPS, and a full range of spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques).
Opportunities exist to travel to collaborating laboratories within the EU and internationally (e.g. Australia and China).
Why Surrey?
The results of RAE2008 ranked Materials Chemistry at Surrey 8th amongst all other related research in the UK.
The Chemistry Department at the University of Surrey is vibrant, has recruited 6 new academic staff recently and was ranked 8th in the UK in the 2012 National Student Survey.
How to apply:
The ideal candidate will have a strong academic record in physical and/or materials chemistry and must be able to demonstrate fluency in English. A willingness to take on teaching duties (which will be paid) is desirable.
Please send your CV and a covering letter explaining the reason why you are interested in this studentship to Dr. Carol Crean, Lecturer, Department of Chemistry, University of Surrey, by email to [Email Address Removed] including transcripts of marks for your undergraduate and/or MSc.
