Dr A Snowden, Prof T Connolly  No more applications being accepted  Competition Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

In 2011 the school of computing and the Institute of mental health collaborated to develop a working model of software designed to illustrate the outcome of narrative analysis. We are looking for a talented and creative software developer to take this project further. Please see http://shnm.ictthatworks.org/ for a proof of principle based upon data from:
Hollins-Martin, C., Snowden, A. ., & Martin, C. R. (2012). Concurrent analysis: Validation of the domains within the Birth Satisfaction Scale. Journal of Reproductive and Infant Psychology, 30(3), 247–269.
The concept of concurrent analysis originated with Dr Snowden. The articulation of the principle was achieved by Professor Connolly and team. These two academics will support the PhD student to further develop the philosophy and practical translation of this project. The long term goal is to generate user friendly software consistent with modern understanding of the interconnected nature of language. The student will generate original knowledge at the interface of qualitative and quantitative assumptions to produce a better understanding and a better method of communication of interpretive research. Knowledge of existing narrative analysis software packages and their limitations is therefore essential.

Existing datasets grounded in mental health research will make up the raw material for analysis. Therefore an interest in mental health research would be an advantage. However the main skills required will be in computing, software development and philosophy, with a particular focus on visual communication of complex data.
