About the Project

Applications are invited from self-funded full time applicants to carry out a PhD project within the Perception and Motion Analysis Research Group (PuMA) at Oxford Brookes on the judgement of action capabilities in manual movements. Everyday movement requires numerous judgements of our action capabilities: Am I able to step over that puddle? Can I fit through that gap? Is my hand big enough to grasp that object? Research has focused on how children and adults judge these action capabilities for gross body movements; however, less work has focused on fine motor movements. The project will consider the way in which children and adults make judgements about action capabilities, such as whether an object is graspable and the point at which two hands are considered necessary rather than one. The relationship between such judgements and motor ability will be a key question in understanding the developmental trend. There will be scope to extend this further into the judgement of action capabilities when working with another individual.

This project is suitable for students with a first class or upper second class (minimum 2.1) honours degree of a Higher Education Institution in the UK or an acceptable equivalent qualification in psychology, human/sports science.

Applicants will be subject to DBS check https://www.gov.uk/disclosure-barring-service-check
