About the Project

A PhD studentship is now available in the area of Open Rotor aerodynamics and aeroacoustic prediction. The studentship provides a unique opportunity to work on an advanced engineering problem that is currently of great importance to industry. The studentship is supported by industry. The Open Rotor concept offers high levels of propulsive efficiency for future aircraft, but suffers from high noise emissions. Tonal noise from Open Rotors is reasonably well understood, but research into broadband noise predictions is a more recent development. Broadband noise is more difficult to model due to complex flow interactions and the high computational expense associated with predictions. This project aims to develop numerical modelling methodologies to allow a better understanding of Open Rotor broadband noise, as well as analytical modelling. This will be done using a high-order in-house computational aeroacoustic code. The outcome of the project will be a more fundamental understanding of the underlying mechanisms behind broadband noise emissions, alongside efficient and accurate methods to model the noise. A good first degree in either engineering, or mathematics or physics is needed. The PhD studentship will provide a good opportunity to work with prominent aerospace companies in the world, and explore relevant problems in the aerospace industry.

The Airbus Aircraft Noise Technology Centre (ANTC) (http://www.southampton.ac.uk/antc/) was opened in November 2008 at the University of Southampton. It is the result of the long-standing collaboration between Airbus and the University on a range of noise research and development projects. The Centre, led by Professor Xin Zhang, brings together academic staff, research fellows and PhD students using state-of-the-art computer simulations and wind tunnel testing to develop new noise reduction concepts. Undergraduate students also work with the research team, providing exciting projects to stimulate the next-generation of engineers for industry.
