About the Project

The School of History at the University of Kent is pleased to offer one University of Kent 50th Anniversary PhD Research Scholarship in the History of Science for applicants starting in September 2015.

The successful candidate will be supervised by Dr Rebekah Higgitt. Applications are encouraged in the following areas:

• History of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, and Royal Greenwich Observatory, especially in the 20th century
• Science and/or scientific training in the Navy, 18th/19th centuries
• Museology and history of science
• History of astronomy and observational sciences in the 18th/19th centuries
• Scientific institutions and government funding in the 19th century
• Science and the public in the 18th/19th centuries, including museums, publishing, performance, biography and satire

In preparation for the University’s 50th anniversary in 2015, The University of Kent has established 100 doctoral scholarships to be awarded annually. Known as Kent’s 50th Anniversary Scholars, successful candidates will demonstrate academic excellence and outstanding research potential.

The School has established itself as one of the leading History departments within the UK. Recognised for its research excellence and quality teaching, it offers a wide range of flexible postgraduate programmes.

The scholarship covers fees in full at the Home/EU rate, as well as a maintenance bursary.

In addition to their application for study, applicants wishing to be considered for these scholarships should:

• Provide a sample of yourwriting

The deadline for receipt of applications eligible for this scholarship is 29 May 2015. Shortlisted applicants will be invited to a panel-led interview in June 2015.

Funding Notes

Candidates must hold a good Honours degree (First or 2i) or a Master's degree at merit or distinction in a relevant subject or equivalent.

The scholarship competition is open to all new postgraduate research applicants.

Current Kent research students are not eligible for this scholarship.

UK, EU and overseas fee paying students are invited to apply. Please note that overseas students must have the appropriate documentation to evidence eligibility to work in the UK.
