Queen Mary's Doctoral College is awarding over £10million in studentships to support the most talented and ambitious new researchers. Successful applicants will receive generous studentships to cover fees and living costs in recognition of the vital role that they will play in Queen Mary's lively research community. Self-funded applicants are also welcome to apply for a PhD in any of the areas in which we can offer supervision.

Subject areas
Our Schools of Geography, History, and Languages, Linguistics and Film are widely regarded as leading centres for postgraduate teaching and research in the UK.
Many of the studentships we offer are jointly held by more than one academic school, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the research activity across the university. Our academics provide PhD supervision across a wide range of subject areas including:

The School of Geography was ranked joint first in the UK for its research in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise and welcomes applications from those interested in PhD research in areas relating to any of our main research themes: Culture, Space and Power; Earth Surface Science; Economy, Development and Social Justice; and Health, Place and Society.
The world-renowned academic staff in our School of History can offer PhD supervision in late medieval and early modern history; the history of Islam and the Crusades; Jewish history; the history of the emotions; the history of ideas and of political thought; the history of medicine; modern British, European, US and global history.
Queen Mary's School of Languages, Linguistics and Film is able to provide PhD supervision across a wide range of subject areas including: Comparative Literature; Iberian and Latin America Studies; Film Studies with a particular interest in European queer theory and film; French literature, thought and visual culture, and macro-sociolinguistics; German Studies particularly related to Anglo-German cultural relations; Linguistics, especially sociolinguistics, syntax/semantics, and/or relationships between them; Russian film, cultural identity, and literary history.
