About the Programme

PhD Studentships

Coventry University: Centre for Trust, Peace, and Social Relations (TPSR).

Maintenance grant: £13,863 maintenance per annum (tax free)

We are looking to recruit two PhD studentships to start in September 2014, to explore contemporary debates surrounding ‘science and religion' by undertaking relevant research in:

1) Social Sciences/Humanities relating to contemporary public space discourse around science and religion in the UK or internationally. The candidate should have a background in a relevant area of social sciences or humanities including the social studies of science, and/or of religion or science technology studies, anthropology or sociology.

2) Social/Experimental Psychology research exploring psychological processes (implicit and/or explicit) contributing to a perceived clash between science and religion. The candidate should have a background in psychology (social, experimental, cognitive or developmental) with a strong knowledge of experimental methods and quantitative data analysis skills.

These PhD students will work within a multidisciplinary research team on the ‘Clash Narratives in Context: Uncovering the Social and Cultural Drivers of Contemporary Science vs. Religion Debates' project within the newly created University Research Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations.

This innovative and unique research project will employ four intersecting approaches: qualitative social science field research; oral history, historical and media discourse analysis; social psychology experimental research; and a large scale quantitative survey of public perceptions, attitudes and identity formation in the UK and Canada.

Coventry University will lead this 3-year research project funded by the Templeton Religion Trust in partnership with York University (Canada) and National Life Stories at the British Library and British Science Association. The research team is led by Principal Investigators Dr Fern Elsdon-Baker (Coventry) and Prof. Bernard Lightman (York, Canada), and Co-Investigators Dr Carola Leicht (Coventry) and Dr Rebecca Catto (Coventry).

These full-time PhD studentships will cover UK/EU fee equivalence plus a bursary of £13,863 per annum for three years.

In addition the university will offer two competitive two-year postdoctoral follow on research positions dependent on the successful submission of PhD thesis within three years/by September 2017 to enable successful PhD students to develop further as an early career professional in this field of research.

Studentship academic contact: Specific research project questions can be directed to Dr Fern Elsdon-Baker by email only (Fern.Elsdon-Baker@coventry.ac.uk)

Successful applicants will have:
• A first or 2:1 undergraduate degree in a related social science, psychology or humanities subject and a strong interest in pursuing research in this field;
• A taught Masters degree in a relevant discipline is preferred, involving a dissertation of standard length written in English; at least at merit level (or equivalent) in line with our normal entry requirements
• The potential to engage in innovative research and to complete the PhD within a three-year period of study;
• To work as active members of the Centre's academic community and the wider project team;
