About Byzantine & Modern Greek Studies Research, MPhil/PhD

The Department of Classics at King's has a distinguished tradition of scholarship in the fields of Modern Greek and Byzantine history, language and literature. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework Classics is ranked 3rd in the UK according to the "power" metric which takes into account both the quality and quantity of research activity and achieved an outstanding score for the impact of its research. 

The department has expertise in the following areas within this field:

  • Greek literature since the 12th century;
  • Greek history in the 19th and 20th centuries;
  • Byzantine history, archaeology and architecture;*
  • Cyprus from Late Antiquity to the early modern era
