About the Project

EPSRC/School Funded (3 years). Supervisors – Stephanie Allen & Saul. J.B. Tendler (Pharmacy); Richard J. A. Hill & Laurence Eaves (Physics and Astronomy)

This project is part of a large multi-centre ‘MagnetoScience’ project (coordinated by the School of Physics and Astronomy, University of Nottingham) which aims to investigate multi-disciplinary and ‘real-world’ applications of high-strength magnetic fields. Recent work has included the study of fruit flies in weightlessness simulated by magnetic levitation [J. R. Soc. Interface 9, 1438-1449 (2012), BMC Genomics 13, 52 (2012)], fluid dynamics in weightlessness [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 154501 (2013), Appl. Phys. Lett. 100, 114106 (2012)] and bacteria in strong magnetic fields [J. R. Soc. Interface 8, 334-344 (2011)]. This project will develop work in which we used such fields to align self-assembled peptide nanostructures [Advanced Materials, 19, 4474 (2007)]. It will investigate how magnetic fields could be employed to control the structure and morphology of a range of pharmaceutical materials including crystalline, amorphous and self-assembled structures of small and biomolecular drug substances.

We seek EU applicants with a degree in Chemistry, Materials, Physics, Pharmacy or a related discipline. Candidates should send a CV/resumé to Dr S. Allen, School of Pharmacy , The University of Nottingham, Nottingham , NG7 2RD (e-mail: [Email Address Removed] or Tel: +441159515050) .

If you would like to make a formal application you can do so online. You will find details of the application process and a link to the online application form on the following website http://pgstudy.nottingham.ac.uk/apply-for-postgraduate-courses.aspx. Please make sure you include Project Supervisor name on your application.
