About the Project

Research Area: Digital Communications

As demands for data access are rapidly growing and the RF wireless spectrum is already congested, Optical Wireless Communication emerges as an alternative solution for today's high-speed data connection. In particular, in an indoor environment, visible light communication can provide solutions for a number of applications such as data access and indoor localization by integrating lighting and data communication.
In this project, we will study different algorithms and communication techniques to provide reliable high-speed optical wireless communication in an indoor environment. We will investigate the optimum design of communication algorithms and transmitter/receiver structures for different applications. We are particularly interested in the efficient use of the degree-of-freedom provided by the array of LED sources at the transmitter side. This research will involve different topics such as information theory, communication techniques, and optics.

Funding Notes

Enthusiastic and self-motivated candidates are sought with a background in applied mathematics and electrical engineering. Applicants must be of outstanding academic merit: a first class or upper second class honours undergraduate degree (or International equivalent) is the minimum qualification requirement.

Studentships will cover University fees (at UK/EU or overseas rate), plus a stipend for 3.5 years at the enhanced EPSRC rate (£14,640 for 2013/14).
