About the Project

The research in my lab concerns visual perception of social information (primarily from faces) and the effects this perception have on the decisions humans make about other people. I am primarily interested by mechanistic explanations for these behaviours. For this reason, I look to measures and manipulations of brain function. In particular, my research looks at how information is coded in different brain regions and how these brain regions communicate together as networks. This typically involves brain imaging techniques (functional magnetic resonance imaging, electroencephalography, manetoencephalography) and behavioural measurement.

A Ph.D. student in my lab will execute a research proposal that indulges his/her interest in this field and the student will be trained in brain imaging methods. If admitted to the programme, the student will have a stipend and support for fMRI scanning costs. There’s fMRI housed in the main psychology building. We also have facilities for EEG and brain stimulation (tCS and TMS).

Royal Holloway, University of London is located on the outskirts of London and is directly connected to Waterloo station by train. Royal Holloway, University of London is one part of an excellent community of science and research, situated in London and affords excellent collaborative opportunities both within Royal Holloway, University of London, and with researchers at nearby, London-based institutions.

Funding Notes

To be competitive for entry to the Ph.D. programme, the applicant would benefit from the equivalent a first in a relevant degree or an Msc with distinction. The quality of the research proposal has a sizable weight too. So please get in touch right away so that we can take sufficient time to work up a strong proposal. The applicant also needs to be a UK or EU citizen. The more relevant research experience the better. MATLAB experience is a plus. Please find more specific information about the College admissions requirements and funding opportunities at https://www.royalholloway.ac.uk/psychology/prospectivestudents/postgraduateresearch/home.aspx.
