The Department of Genetics at Leicester is internationally respected and was awarded a top rating of 5* in the last national Research Assessment Exercises, making it the best Genetics Department in the country.
It underwent a major expansion during 1999/2000 with the appointment of six new members of academic staff and receives support from MRC, BBSRC, NERC, medical charities and other funding bodies.
Groups are accommodated in modern open-plan laboratories provided with all facilities necessary for fundamental research and training in genetics.
Interests range across studies of prokaryotic organisms and yeast, development and behaviour in fruit flies and other eukaryotes, human and medical genetics, population genetics and evolution.
All groups use molecular techniques to resolve the problems addressed and there are opportunities for intra- and inter-departmental collaborations.
The department provides a supportive and stimulating environment for postgraduate training with access to courses in transferable skills and wide-ranging seminar programmes.
Students expecting to gain a First Class Honours degree are encouraged to apply early in order to be nominated for special studentships (e.g. Wellcome Trust, British Heart Foundation, British Diabetic Association).
