The Department supports a large and active postgraduate community. We offer three major postgraduate research programmes, PhD, EngD & MRes.
PhD Research Programme
This is normally a three year programme. Those undertaking research leading to a PhD most commonly carry out the major part of their research within the Department. However, a large number of the PhD programmes are undertaken in collaboration with an industrial laboratory with some time spent in the laboratory of the industrial partner. A two year research programme leading to the degree of MPhil is also offered.
Doctor of Engineering (EngD) in Communications
The Engineering Doctorate Centre in Communications is a partnership between a large number of industrial companies and research organisations in the communications sector together with the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and the Department of Computer Science at UCL. The Centre provides an outstanding opportunity for recent well-qualified graduates to engage in a programme of doctoral research in industry in combination with advanced post graduate training, leading to the award of an Engineering Doctorate degree.
Master of Research (MRes) in Telecommunications
This is a one year programme. It combines specialist taught courses with a substantial research/development project element, supported by 'generic and transferable' personal skills development applicable to R&D and to industrial activities more generally. The programme has been devised and developed with the close co-operation and support of the telecommunications industry.
