ESRC CASE Studentship:The Socio-cultural Impacts of Museums in the Local Community: an Investigation of the Royal Albert Memorial Museum, Exeter.

The University of Exeter in partnership with the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter is seeking to appoint a doctoral studentship for three years to start in March 2010.

Culture-based strategies have been central to urban regeneration across the world, but maximizing these opportunities often involves significant investment from public bodies to drive major programmes of refurbishment and acquisition. These are necessary to ensure that museums, galleries, libraries and archives are relevant to 21st Century consumers. At the heart of recent attempts to evaluate this type of investment has been the so-called ‘triple bottom line’ of sustainable development; however, while the economic and environmental impacts of investments in museums and galleries are better understood in relative terms, the socio-cultural impacts, especially within the local communities they serve, have received much less attention.

This studentship aims to investigate, capture and analyse the range of socio-cultural impacts generated by the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) in the period after its reopening in 2011. The RAMM is currently closed for a total refurbishment, the principal funders for which are Exeter City Council and the Heritage Lottery Fund. Recognised as one of the South West’s major Museum Services, it has also benefited from the Renaissance programme of the Museum, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA). The student will be expected to conduct empirical research through a mixed methods approach. This will utilize both quantitative and qualitative techniques including, but not restricted to, questionnaire surveys and face-to-face interviews with key informants and museum user groups.

The studentship is based in Centre for Sport, Leisure and Tourism Research (www.ex.ac.uk/slt). You will benefit from co-supervision within the University Business School and from the chance to work closely with the Royal Albert Memorial Museum (RAMM) as the project partner. The RAMM will support you in the further development of your practical social science skills and will also offer you opportunities to network with key individuals in the cultural sector.

You should hold a good first degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. Business and Management; Economics; Geography; Sociology; Heritage, Leisure or Tourism Studies or Management) and have, or be about to obtain, a Masters degree in a relevant subject area. Preference will be given to applicants who have completed an ESRC-approved programme of social sciences training at Masters level or equivalent. However, applications are welcome and will be considered from candidates with other Masters degrees and/or relevant experience.

Funding Notes
UK/EU level fees will be paid, with a maintenance grant that matches the standard ESRC rate for CASE awards (for 2009/10 this is £15,290). To apply, you should be based in the UK or EU and qualify for a fees and maintenance award under ESRC’s rules for residential eligibility (www.esrc.ac.uk).

Please send copy of your CV, names and addresses of three referees and a brief statement of no more than 2 sides A4 outlining your academic interests and reasons for wishing to undertake this studentship to Emma Roberts, University of Exeter Business School (E.Roberts@ex.ac.uk) marked with the reference, ESRC-RAMM.
