Applications are invited for a four year full time PhD studentship as part of the ‘Empirical eating disorder classification and validation using prospective studies” Research Project funded via a United States National Institute for Mental Health Research (NIMH) project grant. The overall project programme comprises of 2 research aims to be addressed across 2 longitudinal studies (one in the UK and one in the US): 1) To empirically derive an eating disorder classification scheme based on comorbidity and outcome (weight gain and weight status, comorbid depression, anxiety, substance and alcohol use, and persistence or worsening of symptoms) during adolescence and young adulthood 2) To empirically determine behavioural cut-offs that should be used to demarcate eating disorders in adolescence and young adulthood This PhD will focus on the aims above for the UK part of the study. This will be carried out in collaboration with the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) and using data collected by ALSPAC. The student will also collaborate on a community study in South London aimed at determining the prevalence of ED. Specific tasks will include: • Review previous literature on eating disorders classification and approaches to this • Analyse data collected on eating disorders behaviours and cognition from a longitudinal study • Collect data on eating disorder psychopathology in a community sample • Link with the US component of the study
Funding Notes Award Type Stipend (inclusive of Home/EU tuition fees)of £20,000 per annum. The studentship will cover full time tuition fees (at the UK/EU rate only) and provide a tax-free stipend for four years.
Entry Requirements Applicants must have, or expect to obtain, a first or upper-second class honours degree in a relevant subject from a UK university or the equivalent. Applicants must have a Masters’ degree in Research Methods or Epidemiology from a UK University. Applicants whose first language is not English must have achieved an IELTS score of at least 6.5 or hold a degree taught in English.
