Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Sciences School of Food Science and Nutrition 4 PhD studentships Supervisor: Professor Gary Williamson Four studentships are available for 3.5 years, and include payment of UK/EU tuition fees, and a postgraduate stipend of approximately £13,500 per annum. The research studentships are fully funded by a research grant from the Nestlé Research Center in Switzerland. The hosting department is the School of Food Science and Nutrition, internationally renowned for its research. The laboratory is well equipped with several HPLCs, including mass spectrometry, coularray, fluorescence and diode array detectors, cell culture facilities, protein purification equipment and other facilities necessary for world-leading research in food biochemistry and nutrition. Two studentships are available from October 2010, and two from January 2011. The research of all the studentships is on the theme of dietary (poly)phenols and health, especially aspects of absorption and bioavailability. Polyphenols modify the risk of cardiovascular and some other chronic diseases, via effects on inflammation, nitric oxide, glucose and lipid metabolism. The 4 projects available are: 1. Absorption of phenolic acids from coffee in humans 1 – human studies (October 2010) 2. Absorption of phenolic acids from coffee in humans 2 – human studies (October 2010) 3. Effect of membrane lipids on function of export transporters (January 2011) 4. Dietary modulation of uptake transporters (January 2011) The students will be able to spend some time at the Nestlé Research Center, Lausanne, Switzerland, to get some experience of the Food Industry and to present their results on a regular basis. The award is available to UK and EU (including Switzerland) students only. It is a requirement that overseas students have achieved a minimum level of English language proficiency (an IELTS score of 6.0, a paper-based TOEFL score of 550, or a computer-based TOEFL score of 220). You will be highly motivated and keen to work in a laboratory environment and also with human volunteers (for projects 1 and 2), with a strong interest in diet and health. You will have a suitable qualification (BSc Honours degree with a minimum classification at 2(i)) in biochemistry, nutrition, food science, chemistry, molecular biology or a related subject. Applications can be made on-line at http://StudentServices.leeds.ac.uk/pls/banprod/bwskalog_uol.P_DispLoginNon or downloaded from www.leeds.ac.uk/info/20023/research and should be sent together with a completed Curriculum Vitae and covering letter to Ms Angela Morrison, School of Food Science and Nutrition, University of Leeds, Leeds LS2 9JT. Email: a.j.morrison@food.leeds.ac.uk Informal enquiries to Professor Gary Williamson, email: g.williamson@leeds.ac.uk Tel: +44 (0)113 343 8380. Closing date: 31st August 2010.
Funding Notes The award is available to UK and EU (including Switzerland) students only.
