Liquid crystalline glasses – new theory and new phenomena

It is extremely hard to come up with a good theoretical description of a glass. They are curious states of matter, not in thermodynamic equilibrium but with molecular motions so sluggish that they do not change their state appreciably over time. Recent theory (mode coupling theory) has, however, proved very successful in predicting the properties of model glasses composed of spherical particles. In this project we aim to extend this work so as to treat rod-like molecules. The interesting prospect is that rod-like molecules form liquid crystals and then these liquid crystals can form into liquid crystalline glasses. these glasses have not been studies theoretically and promise to show new properties and applications. The end result will be new insights into the behaviour of a new class of materials.

Funding Notes
There is a limited number of studentships available for UK/EU students with a 2.1. degree or better. Full fees and maintenance are available for UK students, fees only for EU students. Overseas students may also apply if their track record is good enough to stand a chance of obtaining a University or UK scholarship.
