About the Project

Summary:
This frontier and interdisciplinary project contributes to addressing a critical knowledge gap between forest loss risks and investor confidence. The studentship will improve understanding of forest-loss risks due to wind which underpin investor confidence in forest investments, including REDD+. The project represents a novel collaboration between University of Edinburgh (Patenaude), Forest Research (Gardiner, Perks) and ForestRe Ltd. (Cottle), and draws on expertise in business, insurance, risk assessment, forest management, modelling and earth observation. The proposed study area is in southern Brazil. The key focus will be on managing risk for institutional investment in carbon forestry, across 3 Forest Management Types (FMTs): commercial biomass, community managed woodfuel & Amazonian natural forest.
