Wow well done Hugh!

You are nearly there Chickpea :)

I have the whole thesis but I am editing each chapter in order. Some need a lot more work, others need some tweaking. I have just made myself a timetable to stick on my wall to stay on track to have the full draft sent in October, but looks like I will be working a lot of weekends to accomplish it I think :/

Well done to both of you too, you are both nearly there! :)

Don't forget to take some time off too, I think I've burnt myself out in past month, and I'm paying for it now, I'm so exhausted! I should pace myself more ...

I took from Wednesday to Monday off as I was recovering from surgery...I was itching to do something productive.

Hoping to make a start on editing the literature review by the end of this week. This is one of those chapters that need a lot of re writing so I need to stop procrastinating and just dive in to that one.

How is everyone this week? What are your plans?

I'm editing this week. I'm trying to take it chapter by chapter, but editing and proofreading is my pet peeve. I'm hoping I'll get a chance to enjoy the lovely weather too :)

How are you doing this week? Have you recovered well from your op?

A question: do you think its OK to use '&' instead of 'and' in headings? Some of my headings in the contents page are going on double lines and its harder to follow.

User: tuutikki - 17 August 2016 11:12

Proof reading is the worst! Good luck with it all, at least you can take that outside with you and enjoy the sunshine! Well, if you're terrible like me and print it out haha. I just don't spot typos on the screen so sort of had to. Double sided and four pages on each sheet though to minimise the damage!

I'm just waiting for my viva date now. It'll be a month on Monday since I submitted and nothing, I wonder if this is normal...

Hugh, are you using a particular style guide? I am using APA style and have been advised to be really careful with things like '&', as my supervisor has seen people picked up on that in viva! It seems terribly nit-picky to me, but apparently there are some style guide freaks who will look specifically at these tiny details!

Hope you get your date through soon! It can't be nice waiting for it to come through.

I'm not using a particular style guide, no. If each heading doesn't fit on one line, its just not as easy to follow. Maybe I'll ask my supervisors

Thanks! :) definitely printing everything off. I'm working through chapter by chapter.

Maybe you should chase it up? We have a rule that viva has to be within 3 months from submission.

What are you doing in this interim period btw?

Yeah, probably one to run past your supervisors. If there's no style guide, it's probably not a problem as long as you use it consistently - I know what you mean about it being easier to navigate if you get things on one line.

Hope you've recovered well, Zutterfly. I'm working on my quants data chapter, which is my least favourite as I am rusty on quants! What about you?

Is anyone else finding that it's still difficult to get going on stuff, even at this late stage? I thought I'd be working like a steam train by now, but I still seem to struggle on a daily basis! I think there is probably a huge dose of fear setting in.

User: Zutterfly - 17 August 2016 13:30

Hugh- this is exactly what I am doing :) currently on chapter 2 of 10. I dreaded this part BUT I am actually finding it quicker than I anticipated. I set myself 2 weeks per chapter, and the current chapter I am working on is looking as though it will be completed by the end of this week. Also, I am surprisingly finding it quite straight forward to cut down my word count focusing on one chapter at a time. I didn't plan on chopping any from the chapter I am currently working on but just by making my wording more concise and eliminating paragraphs that do not seem as relevant, I have got rid of 2000 words!

Chickpea- Oh yes definitely. I had a rubbish day yesterday... I had a coffee with someone to discuss PhD related stuff, then mustered a tiny paragraph of work in 6 hours. I think learning when to put the work down for a few hours is important. When I have a dip in productivity now I go and do something else, even if its some laundry or washing the dishes :)

User: tuutikki - 17 August 2016 13:31

Hugh - Yes, we have that 30-month rule too. If I hear nothing by the end of the week I'll send the chair an email. I just want it to be over!! I'm actually working, got a research associate position at the same uni where I did (do) my PhD. Been here a few months, had to finish the thesis while working which wasn't the easiest. Really just want to move on now and focus on the new research I'm doing! Starting to prepare for the viva now as well after a wee break.

Chickpea - Yes! I definitely struggled! If I'm perfectly honest for me it was a sort of a 'meh, I don't even care anymore' feeling haha. Got a bit of a second wind once I'd complied it all into one document though. It finally felt 'real' and then I just wanted to get it off my hands asap so that motivated me. Good luck with the chapter!
