Hello rubyw, of course welcome to the late evening push! :) (or early morning for Sue!)!

I'm sure you'll be fine, just enjoy your cuppa and maybe a biscuit! you've got two hours, so i'm sure you'll manage!

I've still not started, but we've booked our gig tickets and a cheap travelodge - manchester here we come! :)

time to read a paper before bed....

good luck folks (up)

User: rubyw - 29 September 2009 01:01

Hi there, I'm still at it - time just vanishes when you're up against it, doesn't it!! Have made another cup of tea and a bit of toast and reminded myself how horrible word is when you've got loads of images - gggrrrr...

Sue, it's good that 3 of you are planning to sub,it around the same time, I found it helped me a lot to have a bit of online company for similar deadlines.

Alpaca, a gig and a trip - very nice! Who are you going to see?

Oh well, better crack on I suppose.... another hour maybe should do it for tonight. :-s

User: Alpacalover - 29 September 2009 09:46

Hi Rubyw,
Hope the tea and toast helped you power through to the finish line!? and you managed to get good sleep before correction submission today?

yeah, its great to know I have other people under same pressures as me and commitments to get done! good to not feel completely alone in the world when you're working late!

Really looking forward to weekend away, as long as i've worked hard enough to deserve the fun! its aphex twin, luke vibert and couple of other DJs, going to be a good night of dancing! :)

speak to you soon peeps

User: Alpacalover - 29 September 2009 22:44

well, i've had a totally rubbish day and feeling %$&&*! went into lab to sort out some last experiments and didn't get any of it done - just plans to do it, so hopefully next week! hate going into office cos everyone always wants to chat and drink tea and stuff (which is lovely, but not for productivity!). So got a spiel ready for interview on thursday, plans for lab work done and thats it! :(

came home tonight and managed to make some data graphs for chapter 4 cos couldnt even face intro!

at home all day tomorrow so i'm going to bed now for a read to chill out before sleep, and hopefully not have restless night again, ready for full day tomorrow getting introduction finished!!

If anyone on the midnight train then I hope you have a good journey with not too many delays and stops :p

only started work abt an hour ago, not much done..too much surfing so came here for some support. After reading few posts ready to go back.

Aim: finish editing the discussion points and complete the chapter.

User: Alpacalover - 30 September 2009 09:49

Hey, hope all that were on the train had a successful night? I have just managed to get out of bed, think i slept ok although still shattered! Just keep having loads of REM and therefore tons of mental dreams, can't seem to get my brain to chill out even if I do read a book and relax for half hour before bed!

Anyway aims for today:
Read 3 papers and find more relevant ones for my last section
WRITE last sections!
Edit through intro if can get sections finished and tidy it all up to submit to sups

not feeling too hopeful but i've got my coffee, cereal, juice, i'm warm, mostly comfy and I WANT this done!!

Hope you have a good day at it too folks! (up)

User: teek - 30 September 2009 20:05

I still have the guilt keeping me coming in every morning but my nocturnal tendencies are kicking in as well now - I had to stop myself coming in at 12am last night after a team pub trip, it seemed oddly appealing at the time.

The only problem I find with pm working is that while the lab staff are gone, the cleaners and security are just arriving :-( I'm starting to get a dog-like response to the hoover (as in grimacing and hiding, not the one where they attack it and bark). That and the mildly creepy security guard who emphasises every conversation by fondling my shoulder.....

Does anyone else find themselves tempted just to stay all night? Not because they're getting masses of work done, but just for the sense of peace?

User: Alpacalover - 30 September 2009 21:45

Hi Teek, and anyone else out there!:)
yeah, labs creep me out and night, a while ago i was in til like 1-2am and every noise resounds! jannies on the midnight shift and stuff and nobody knowing you're there....! but is good for peace and quiet!

so from earlier post-

Anyway aims for today:
Read 3 papers and find more relevant ones for my last section DONE
WRITE last sections! ALMOST DONE
Edit through intro if can get sections finished and tidy it all up to submit to sups NOT DONE

read my papers, found ALOT more and my last sections turned into about 6 pages long which has taken me hours, then decided it was time for food so made dinner and took an hour out to chill cos was feeling stressed! and then my dad phoned and ended up in tears on him just feeling totally overwhelmed!! so now i'm going to at least try and get this finished, got to finish this last bit and then sort out my aims and hypothesis cos its abit haphazard!

Got interview tomorrow and done no more prep since yesterday! its not til 11am tomorrow so hopefully manage to go over stuff in morning for it, but got to that stage of not caring? does that sound weird!? I think it probably does! but its full time and if i did get offered it i'm not sure i would take it as it would mean i wouldnt get much time to write and I really want done by xmas! whereas if i just stick to the part time hours i've now got lecturing I can stick to my plan and hopefully submit asap!!! so just going to go to interview and do my best and see what happens, no point stressing!???

sorry if i'm blabbery, i'm feeling very tired and teary and having one of my down days....

Good luck to anyone out there whos working!

Hello

Awww - hugs to you!!

I've rallied and am OK, now it's your turn to be down :-( One day we'll all be happy and productive together - when we finish!! It's horrible feeling overwhelmed - you've got a lot on at the moment, with lecturing, the thesis, and a job interview. Intervews are hideously stressful, they're so unnatural. But you're right not to care so much about it! It sounds like you don't really want it - and at this point, spending the next 6 mths finishing the thesis is the most important thing. Other jobs will come up, and yeh, working full-time while finishing would be really hard. So, be confident, bluff your way through the interview, and good luck! But don't be too down if you don't get it.

One step at a time. Get the interview done, then onto the next bit of the thesis. Make sure you relax before the interview too - do some breathing exercises to calm yourself. We'll asll get there!

And not workin in a lab, I can imagine they're creepy! Been watching too many horror movies...

User: Alpacalover - 30 September 2009 23:15

Thank you Sue, hugs just arrived and made me feel better :-)

I'm just about to wrap up for the night, i've managed to get most of what i wanted to get done today done, and if i can get my aims and hypothesis finished tomorrow i'll be happy for going away on friday!

yeah, I really like the job profile, unfortunately its just too much i think while trying to write. I feel just like you, i don't want my PhD dragging on,if it takes more time and i dont get to do it every day it'll get harder to keep going and get to viva stage, I want it fresh in my head to the day its over! Can't wait to feel like Dr Lara does right now!! but we'll be there soon - faster than we realise probably!

But i always give things my best shot so will go to interview and give my all and see how i get on, would be good to gauge my employability for that kind of job though, always a wee confidence boost!

So glad you saw your supervisor and got stuff sorted too, good to know you're feeling a bit better about things! Sorry, i just got your IM but think its bed time! :-( I'll get in touch tomorrow night and update on my progress! :)

Hope you have a good productive day!

KT xx

Another night...not feeling great though, have a bad cold. Only going to sort out few things.
Good luck for the interview Alphacalover and keep going (up).
Teak, I feel the same about staying up whole night, the most productive and peaceful time of the day. Even if I don't plan any work, I do get something done compared to daytime when everyone seem to be making nothing but noises.

Today aim: Sort the contents page and bit of formatting, checking references

Yesterday-Editing chapter -DONE (following Lara's method) (up)

Checking in. Trying to work through some more pages of thesis final draft feedback. So more comma adding, word removing etc. Just doing the easy changes for now. Will worry about the trickier issues later.

EDIT: And signing out an hour later. Got through another 25 or so pages of detailed edits, so that's good progress for now. Sleep time calls though.

User: Alpacalover - 01 October 2009 09:44

Hi Sheena and Bilbo!
Well done B on a good hours productive editing! :) hope you get some good sleep!

Thanks Sheena, just chilling out before interview, slept even worse last night so not feeling great, feel like I cant even think so the interview is going to be pretty funny I feel! complete lack or recall, but hopefully when i relax into it all will be fine!
Sorry to hear you got a cold, remember getting better has to be your number one priority! keeping going through it will only tire you more and slow your immune system! get rest and keep calm and you'll be back on the road ASAP! :)

come to campus library for first time in ages - charging £1.20 for a cup of tea - when did students become so rich!!! better go to cash machine if i want some caffeine before interview!! :(

have a good day all! (up)

User: teek - 01 October 2009 21:54

Sounds like a productive night was had by all!

Alpacalover, how did the interview go? Hope you got enough sleep to sparkle :)

This thread has inspired me, I've worked all day anyway but I'm going to tackle some papers and notes before bed just to enjoy the night hours.

On which note.... does anyone else feel that they're a little bit gleeful about the arrival of the darker nights? I seem to be delighted with the crisp air and minight skies just now, I wonder if it's just an extension of the nightly peace I've taken to.

User: Alpacalover - 01 October 2009 22:09

Evening all, i'm on the midnight train tonight! choo choo! :)

Interview was ok thats Teek, didn't get much sleep again unfortunately but managed to struggle may way through it, did my demonstration ok and then they quizzed me for an hour!!!!! not sure how my answers were but they kept asking me stuff so can't have been too bad!? find out next week so will keep ya'll posted!

just having cup of coffee and some chocolate, read afew papers and going to tackle this last section - hopefully! I keep saying that then finding new and interesting stuff and trailing that too!!! fingers crossed by time i go to bed tonight intro is ready for final edit over weekend!

Hope Bilbo and Sue are doing ok too tonight!?

I'm not sure about the inspired by crisp nights i'm afraid, I just see it as the start of coldness, increased heating bills and my SAD onset! but must try and stay optimistic...... :)

Best of luck for the midnight run folks......over and out
