The nocturnal workers' thread

User: chrisrolinski - 13 June 2009 11:52

Hope it went well? I will be on the midnight express tonight, as I have a paper due with an editor on monday, but want to take sunday off work. So must knuckle down.

Well, it's time to dust down the Midnight Express, re-stoke the the coal fire engine and build up some steam pressure, cos - chug, chug, chug...whooooo....whooooo...chug, chug, chug - its time to journey to destination Hard Work during the wee small hours for a couple of weeks now. Have a methodology chapter to write and some (scratch that) a lot of data analysis to do. But don't worry, my train has many carriages so if there are any other travellers, please feel free to register your interest and join me on the arduous and lonely endeavour that is burning the midnight oil. All aboard!:-)

anyone else burning the ol midnight oil?

i want to write a couple of pages of notes before i call it a day.

i'm feeling quite peckish too, but i know if i eat this late, i will be so uncomfortable when i go to bed. i will instead dream about what i am going to have for breakfast tommorow lol. i love food! :p hmm maybe i will have a bowl of all bran fruit cereal, thats marginally healthy and not too heavy. i will eat that after i've written 2 pages of notes :) and then call it a night

edit. okay im quite hungry now, decided to make myself a tuna sandwhich and call it a night. i only wrote 1 page of notes. but i've parked on the downhill so know exactly what i am doing tommorow!

bbbb i can totally relate to that. i am trying to shift my body clock back to. but yah i can stay up late but find it so hard to wake up early. i am gonna start going to the library once a week which involves me having to wake up at 9am. so i want to start geting used to that, so the day that i gotta get up early, im not a walking zombie. so far i managed to wake up at 10.30am today, but thats only cause of the postman rang the bell to give me a parcel.

but hopefully by me waking up earlier, i will get sleepy earlier. because if left to my own devises, i will end up going to sleep later and later like 4am, and waking up later and later like 1pm. so dont wanna do that.

My bodyclock means I'm naturally nocturnal. Unfortunately I've also got to put in an appearance at uni a couple of times a week which involves getting up at 7.30. I'm finding it pretty difficult and when I manage it takes me to mid-afternoon before I can function. Fun times ahead.

me three! i did no work today, totally distracted by all the pretty snow ! hehe

gonna read 6 pages from my thesis to make up for lack of work. and tommorow gonna get up and shift my body clock once and for all!! hopefully :p

Quote From pablo:

Since my undergrad years I have developed a pattern of staying up late (3-4am) and sleeping in until lunchtime. I've tried on numerous occasions to break this cycle, and sometimes have managed to go for a week or two on normal hours, but my bodyclock always reverts back. I'm at the point of giving up fighting, and just accepting that I'm a creature of the night!
wow pablo! you sound just like me!! every single day i have a fight with myself, and tell myself, okay TOMMOROW is the day i am going to wake up at 10am. but every morning, i turn my alarm off and end up waking up at 12pm, and then feeling awfully guilty for wasting the morning sleeping! i tend to go to bed around 2am.
i have also tried many times to break the cycle, but maybe some people are just night owls and aren't early birds. my parents keep telling me i should go to bed by midnight at the latest, or i will get dark circles under my eyes from sleeping late. but then i think, if i get my 8 hours, does it really matter what hours i get them?

i could technically go to bed at midnight and wake up at 8am. but i just cant seem to do that.

i'm going to slowly shift my body clock back. and FORCE myself to wake up at 10am tommorow no matter what. and then maybe i will get sleepy earlier , instead of being wide awake at 2am. well i say that everyday, but it doesnt stop me from trying everyday lol.

good luck Chris and miss spacey, keep going, you're doing great!

i'm blowing out my mightnight candle and calling it a day. i finally finished murray's book!!

- thanks so much for the recommendation Miss spacey! it really is a great book for viva prep, i would recommend everyone read it after they submit their thesis in preparation for their viva. its very concentrated, so will take longer to read that you anticipate.

hope you two are okay. (up)
