This masterclass will demystify the concept of a PhD research proposal, and help you better understand exactly what a proposal should and shouldn’t be. It’ll give you hints and tips, leaving you confident that you’ll write a proposal that'll stand head and shoulders above the rest.

Finding & funding your PhD in Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences

As funding avenues are very different for different research areas, this talk focuses on PhD study in the Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences. It will cover funding from Research Councils, charities & trusts, taking out a PhD loan, and what a university scholarship could mean for you.


Finding & funding your PhD in STEM – What a Research Council studentship means, what’s involved and how to apply

This talk will cover finding your PhD in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Medicine field, and the funding opportunities available. It’ll explain what Research Councils are, how they award funding and how to apply for these fully funded PhD projects. The session will also cover alternative funding methods, such as PhD loans and charities & trusts.

Our panel of current PhD students are based at different institutions and are at different points in their PhD journey. Come along to hear their insight, and ask your questions about applying, interviews, funding, and the day-to-day reality of being a PhD student.

Although PhD LIVE runs from 11.15 - 15.00, you can drop in at any time during the event and don't need to stay for the full talks programme.

Writing a PhD research proposal can be a daunting prospect, but our expert presenters - including Dr Alex Conner from the University of Birmingham - are here to help.

Join our pre-fair session at 11.15 (ahead of the exhibition opening at 12:00) for a Masterclass in PhD proposal writing. The talk will increase your confidence in, and understanding of, the PhD application process, including helpful hints and tips to make sure your PhD application stands head and shoulders above the rest.

The session is free to attend, but due to its popularity we ask for a £5 deposit to guarantee your place. This will be automatically refunded to your account within 5 working days when you attend the event. If you can’t make it, that’s no problem, just let us know and we’ll still be happy to refund your £5. You’ll be given the option to book the Masterclass when you book your free ticket for the event (if there’s any space left)!
