Clara Mackenzie

Country of origin: Canada
PhD: PhD in Marine Biology
University: Heriot-Watt University

I am thrilled to be awarded the scholarship, it came as a very welcome surprise and I am most appreciative of the support.

I spent many hours looking through projects on until finding one that I felt was suited to me and offered an exciting challenge. was very useful to me in that it provided an excellent overview of PhD projects and associated universities and also provided key information regarding funding for projects.

My future plan is to carry on in marine research as either a consultant for public or private marine organisations or a post-doctoral researcher in a university setting. Over the course of my PhD, I will be working with a variety of experts in the areas of marine science and management. Such involvement will provide me with the foundational experience, knowledge and skills to support my development into a competent marine researcher.

George Low

Country of origin: UK
PhD: PhD Music
University: The University of Edinburgh

I’m both delighted and honoured to be a scholarship winner! is a great place to find information on all aspects of the PhD process, and I found the Postgraduate Forum particularly useful in gaining an insight into life as a PhD student.

My research spans music, psychology and sociology so The University of Edinburgh was my first choice as they have departments with well-respected and established reputations in these fields.

I plan to continue my research into the relationship between disability and musical identity with a view to raising awareness of the issues disabled musicians face. Having the experience of PhD research strategies and methodologies will hopefully be of great benefit.

Katrien Steenmans

Country of origin: Belgium
PhD: PhD in Law
University: University of Surrey

It is both a very welcome surprise and amazing to be a winner of the scholarship – since finding out I have not stopped smiling!

It is partly thanks to that I am at the University of Surrey. Throughout last year, continuously made me aware of the various PhD opportunities, one of which was at Surrey. I cannot recommend enough as it is an invaluable source of information!

I really enjoyed my Masters dissertation, and during the process I decided I wanted to continue researching the topic.

The main aim of my PhD is to gain further insight into my main research interests. Hopefully this will provide me with a platform for my future plans whether in academia or industry.

Matthew Rosser

Country of origin: UK
PhD: PhD in Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences
University: The University of Manchester

It feels absolutely fantastic to be a Scholarship winner.

I'd been looking for a very specific subject to study for some years; offers such a wide range of different study areas I knew that eventually I'd find what I was looking for and I did!

My area of interest is endometriosis. Both my wife and my mother suffered from this devastating condition which receives nowhere near enough attention as it should. Therefore I've pledged to use my passion to better understand endometriosis and hopefully improve the lives of the millions of women who suffer from it. Finding a university that offers postgraduate research into endometriosis is difficult, but I was lucky enough to find one with excellent facilities and a great research team.

Engineering, Maths and Computing PhD Scholarship 2013

Nicole Badstuber

Country of origin: UK
PhD: PhD in Governance and Policy Frameworks of Infrastructure in Liveable Cities
University: University College London

Finding out I'd won the Scholarship was the best email to arrive in my inbox that day. Put a huge smile on my face. It was wonderful to hear that my comic was a hit amongst the judges!

The prize will ease the financial burden of undertaking a PhD. Thank you to the team for this award.

The PhD I am undertaking was advertised as a studentship on the website. I had subscribed to the regular email bulletins listing PhD opportunities at universities. I have been keen to pursue a doctorate for the past couple of years as was thrilled to find the studentship I am now undertaking advertised on the website in February this year. The research subject aligned perfectly with my interests and background.

I am keen to build on the foundation of my PhD and further develop research in the area of city governance and infrastructure policy. I would be interested in applying for my own research projects to explore a more extensive international comparative study building on work I will have done as part of my PhD.

Alongside further research, would like to foster understanding and inspire the next generation of students through engaging teaching and interesting engagement with the subject matter.

Claire Gilbert

Country of origin: UK
PhD: PhD in War Studies
University: King’s College London, University of London

I feel very lucky to have been considered, and I am very surprised to have won this scholarship! I’m extremely grateful to for recognising my project as I feel it’s an important issue which affects everyone. The scholarship will go a long way to helping me with university costs and tuition fees. has been a valuable tool in helping me to choose my university and my course. I already knew the specific area of research that I wanted to pursue and the website allowed me to compare courses quite easily. War studies isn’t offered at a lot of universities and I’ve often been redirected to different departments such as Law when asked to talk about my research proposal at open days, so FindAPhD was a good way of looking at the available and more interdisciplinary courses.

I’ve also spent a fair amount of time on the postgraduate forum as there’s a really supportive community with active members who are ready with advice. Answers about my research proposal ideas and problems were answered quickly and honestly. I will continue to use this area of the website while studying as there are several threads on pacing yourself and how to face the viva at the end!

My eventual aim is to work in a research position, either at a university or a think tank.

Medical Sciences and Health PhD Scholarship 2013

Megan De Ste Croix

Country of origin: UK
PhD: PhD in Genetics
University: University of Leicester

It feels really surprising to be a Scholarship winner – I was worried my entry would be a little too different from what might be expected – but brilliant.

I actually created a contact through that led to my PhD. I just missed out on a position I applied for last year (through but the supervisor kept me in mind when he was co-supervising a new project this year, I applied and this time round I was successful. Making contacts is really important.

Having tried commercial/non-research lab work I know research is the way for me so a PhD was the obvious choice. I want to keep working in research and my PhD will give me the skills and confidence to do that. I love the detailed nature of research but I’m beginning to discover a real enjoyment for scientific communication so I hope to pursue this in some way as well.
