The genetic contribution of biological age differences in disease risk
Dr C Nelson, Prof F Dudbridge, Dr V Codd
Application Deadline: 27 January 2019
Telomere length (TL) is reflective of cellular age, shortens over time and is proposed as a marker of biological age. Here in Leicester we are measuring mean Leucocyte Telomere Length (LTL) in all 500,000 individuals participating in UK Biobank, these exciting data will be used for this project.
PhD studentship: Investigating whether anti-VEGF treatment can cause the switch to VEGF-independent signalling and metabolic reprogramming in intraocular cells
  Dr H Jia
Application Deadline: 11 February 2019
A 3-year full-time PhD studentship is available at the Division of Biotherapeutics, National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC), in collaboration with the Division of Medicine, University College London (UCL).
Software for detection and monitoring of biological threats from metagenomics data
  Prof D Shields
Application Deadline: 10 February 2019
Principal UCD Supervisor. Denis Shields (School of Medicine). UCD Co-supervisor. Professor Seamus Fanning;. JRC Ispra Supervisor.
The impact of forest roads on the rate of biological invasion
  Dr N Petrovskaya
Application Deadline: 6 February 2019
Roads can play an important role in the spread of invasive plant species by serving as corridors for movement as well as providing prime habitat for establishment (see reference [1]).
Study an International PhD in Biological, Medical and Health Sciences
4 year PhD programme for International Students in Biological, Medical and Health Sciences, including PG Certificate in Teaching.
How Does The Protein Corona Affect The Intra-Cellular Behaviour Of Nanoparticles? (MARINMU19SF)
  Dr M J Marin
Application Deadline: 31 May 2019
Research in the Marín group focuses on the application of nanoscience to address biological challenges. The main interests are in the synthesis and the use of nanomaterials as intracellular sensors and as drug delivery systems for cancer treatment.
Integrated biological-chemical-physical modelling to predict early signs of land degradation
  Dr M Montero-Calasanz
Application Deadline: 31 January 2019
This project is part of the ONE Planet DTP. Find out more here. https://research.ncl.ac.uk/one-planet/. Coastal areas of the UK are highly vulnerable to climate change (Fig.1).
Elucidating the molecular-level interactions between nanocarbons and biological membranes
  Dr S Romero-Vargas Castrillon
Application Deadline: 15 June 2019
The emergence of carbon-based nanomaterials (e.g., fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene) in the past two decades unleashed a scientific revolution due to their unique physical and chemical properties, such as mechanical strength, high electrical and thermal conductivity, and antimicrobial properties.
(MERI) Atmospheric Ice Nucleation of biological particles
  Research Group: Atmospheric Science
Dr P Connolly, Dr D Topping, Prof M Gallagher
Application Deadline: 6 February 2019
The formation of ice in natural clouds occurs at temperatures below 0 °C. Pure liquid water drops do not freeze until temperatures are as low as -36 °C, or so, due to the homogeneous nucleation of ice.
PhD Studentship in “Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of New Chemical Entities from Morphine”
  Dr H Lam
Applications accepted all year round
Closing Date. Open until filled. Department. GlaxoSmithKline Carbon Neutral Laboratories for Sustainable Chemistry (School of Chemistry).
