Cardiotoxicity of cancer drugs targeting the extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) cascade
  Prof A Clerk
Applications accepted all year round
"Heart failure is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The contractile cells of the heart, cardiomyocytes, possess many protective mechanisms, allowing them to withstand pathophysiological stresses.
Development of stimuli-responsive metallosupramolecular architectures for sensing and/or delivery of medicine for the treatment of solid tumours
  Research Group: Chemistry and Biosciences
Dr D Petty, Dr M Najafzadeh, Dr S Pike
Applications accepted all year round
Applications are invited for a new self-funded PhD opportunity in the School of Chemistry & Biosciences at the University of Bradford.
Exploration of novel approaches to anti-cancer treatment: manipulation of mutant p53
Prof Y. Haupt, Dr S. Haupt
Applications accepted all year round
P53 is the most mutated gene in human cancer, affecting about half the cases of human cancer. We have recently identified novel regulators of mutant p53 using sophisticated loss of function whole genome high through put screen (image 1).
Magnetic hyperthemia for cancer treatment: synthesis, biofunctionalisation of nanoparticles for thermo-chemotherapy
  Prof N T K Thanh
Application Deadline: 30 April 2019
Functional magnetic nanoparticles for cancer treatment. Supervisor. Prof Nguyen TK Thanh. [email protected]; http:/
Chemical modulation of cellular redox balance for cancer treatment
  Dr I Romero-Canelon
Applications accepted all year round
Platinum complexes, cisplatin, oxaliplatin and carboplatin, are the most widely used anticancer drugs. However, these DNA-targeting treatments are a low selectivity approach with deleterious consequences and a high incidence of resistance.
Targeting addiction to a breast cancer metastasis survival pathway by inhibition of RAN GTPase
Research Group: Institute of Cancer Therapeutics
  Dr S Shnyder, Prof M El-Tanani, Dr S Betmouni
Applications accepted all year round
Metastatic cancer is a major global health burden. Each year, eleven million new cases of cancer are diagnosed worldwide, including 5 million cases in industrialized countries.
Understanding the role of the globin cytoglobin in cancer cell drug resistance
  Dr N J Hodges
Applications accepted all year round
Cytoglobin is related to haemoglobin and myoglobin but has a very poorly understood biological function. Work in our lab has shown that expression of cytoglobin in cancer cells alters mitochondrial function and affords protection from anti-cancer drugs including cisplatin.
Identifying novel drug combinations to improve personalised therapy in cancer
  Dr S Varadarajan
Applications accepted all year round
Failure of chemotherapeutic agents to kill cancer cells is attributed to resistance mechanisms acquired by the cancer cells, often through evasion of apoptosis.
Understanding the mechanism of action of ferro-nucleobase analogues
  Dr N J Hodges
Applications accepted all year round
Through collaboration with Professor Jim Tucker (School of Chemistry) we are studying the cellular effects of a novel DNA base analogues based on the organometallic compound ferrocene.
(MCRC Non-Clinical) Developing cellular micromotors to improve ovarian cancer management
Dr C.K Schmidt, Prof R Edmondson, Prof D Brison, Prof S Taylor
Application Deadline: 24 March 2019
Conventional cancer chemotherapies are unspecific and elicit severe side effects. Yet, they remain the backbone of current therapies, illustrating the need for new and more specific approaches.
