  Environmental Perception in Motile Diatoms
  Prof G J C Underwood, Dr G Wheeler
Application Deadline: 8 January 2019
Supervisory Team. Dr Glen Wheeler ([email protected]) - Marine Biological Association. Prof Graham Underwood ([email protected]) - School of Biological Sciences, University of Essex.
Re-thinking insect adaptation to Antarctica’s extreme environments
Dr S Hayward, Dr L Orsini, Prof J Colbourne
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
Antarctica has been isolated from the other Southern Hemisphere continents for at least 28 million years (Myr). Model reconstructions of the last glacial maximum (LGM ~20 000 years BP) suggest that all low-lying coastal areas on Antarctica, and many sub-Antarctic islands were completely covered by ice.
Improving Agroforestry in Latin America with the Versatile Tree Genus Inga
  Dr K Dexter
Application Deadline: 10 January 2019
See. Summary. The student will contribute to a funded project using experimental and observational approaches to determine the best Inga species for agroforestry, while developing their own projects on specific species of Inga.
Dissecting the role of root exudates in density-dependent growth responses in plants
Research Group: BBSRC White Rose DTP
  Dr T.A. Bennett, Prof J P Knox
Application Deadline: 7 January 2019
Plants have a remarkable ability to perceive both their own roots and those of neighbouring plants, and to adapt their root growth accordingly.
Climate change impacts on subsistence agriculture in Sub-Saharan Africa – an exploration using data assimilation with the JULES land surface model
Dr J Kaduk, Dr D Ghent
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
Climate change is expected to impact African water and food security, sustainable development and economic sustainability (ISS, 2010).
Functional biology and ecology of aquatic fungi (CUNLIFFEPMBA19ARIES)
  Dr M Cunliffe
Application Deadline: 8 January 2019
Fungi are well established as important components of aquatic ecosystems, however the functional roles that they fulfil remain poorly understood (Grossart & Rojas-Jimenez 2016).
Using novel phenomics technology for environmental sensitivity prediction in marine invertebrates (RUNDLEP19ARIES)
  Dr S Rundle
Application Deadline: 8 January 2019
Scientific background. This PhD will apply a new, cutting-edge technology, EmbryoPhenomics, to develop novel tools for predicting environmental sensitivity in marine invertebrates.
The role of lipid-store body condition in the behaviour and reproduction of cetaceans
  Prof P Miller
Application Deadline: 7 January 2019
Body condition, here defined as the quantity of energy stores carried in the fat (lipid) stores of an individual, reflects an integration of metabolic costs and foraging success - but also reflects the reproductive needs of the individual in their life cycle (Miller et al., 2011).
