Understanding the rates and processes responsible for the movement of plastic through an estuary and potential accumulation
Dr M Bowen, Assoc Prof G Coco
Application Deadline: 1 July 2019
The project will involve designing and implementing particle-tracking scenarios for different particle behaviour and estuarine settings to understand the rates and processes responsible for the movement of plastic through an estuary and potential accumulation.
Geophysical assessment of Lime/Clay grout injection of estuary and reservoir embankments subject to badgers burrows erosion
  Dr P Sentenac
Application Deadline: 30 September 2019
According to studies, 46 % of dams and embankments failures are due to severe internal erosion (Foster et al., 2000). Animal burrowing can lead to a preferential path for the water flow and seepage through the flood embankments that could lead to a partial or total collapse of the structure.
Fishscapes and Fish as Biocultural Heritage - MScR in Global Environmental Challenges
  Prof P Coates
Application Deadline: 1 August 2019
About the Project. Within the wider theme of nature as heritage and operating with the notion of the animalscape, this project explores the status of certain anadromous and catadromous fish (for example, salmon, eel and lamprey) as cultural as well as ecological keystone species.

Biology of the invasive Chinese mitten crab in the river Thames
  Prof D Morritt
Applications accepted all year round
The Chinese mitten crab, Eriocheir sinensis, is an invasive brachyuran crab species (one of the top 100 most invasive species) that is now well established in the River Thames and tributaries.
Effect of bed roughness on the spreading and dilution of gravity currents
Research Group: Centre For Sustainable Environments
  Prof Y Guo
Applications accepted all year round
Gravity current is frequently encountered in natural (e.g. saltwater intrusion in estuary) and men-made environment (e.g. mining solution; desalination).
