gas turbine PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships

We have 23 gas turbine PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships

Hot corrosion studies of gas turbine alloy materials PhD

This is a self-funded PhD position to work with Dr Adnan Syed in the Surface Engineering and Precision Centre. The PhD project will focus studying high temperature corrosion mechanisms in details to identify the material degradation and coatings applications details in extreme environments. Read more

Combined Cycle Gas Turbine – CCS; experiment and modelling

This project will combine an experimental and modelling study of a combined cycle gas turbine with CCS. A Turbec T100 gas turbine will be modified to allow the investigation of the effect of exhaust gas recycle and or steam injection on its performance, with measurement of power output and exhaust gas emissions. Mid-infrared Laser Amplifiers for Tomographic Imaging of Chemical Species in Gas Turbine Combustion and Green Aviation

Supervisory Team: Prof Johan Nilsson, Prof Jayanta Sahu . Project description. University of Southampton is seeking a committed candidate for laser research towards green aviation and net-zero carbon emission from gas turbines within the LITECS programme. Read more

Advanced optical diagnostics for temperature measurement in gas turbine flames

This project aims to develop advanced optical methods for measurement within the combustion environment. The project will be conducted within the state-of-the-art NCCAT labs with a focus on delivering optical temperature measurements that are applicable to aerospace gas turbines. Read more

PhD Studentship in Development of a vibration management concept for gas turbine engines

Applications are invited for a research studentship in the field of future aeroengine technology, leading to the award of a PhD degree. The post is supported by a bursary and fees (at the UK student rate) provided by the EPSRC, with a generous bursary top-up from industrial funds. EPSRC candidates should fulfil the eligibility criteria for the award. . Novel Generative Adversarial Networks for Rapid Engineering Design

Supervisory Team: Dr. David Toal. Project description. Conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs) have gained notoriety in the media for their ability to create so-called “deep fakes” but their power can also be harnessed to provide predictions of optimal engineering designs. Read more

Performance Assessment and Flexibility Study of Natural Gas-Fired Power Plants Integrated with Intensified Solvent Based Carbon Capture

Natural gas-fired (mainly combined cycle gas turbine) power plants are becoming increasingly popular due to its cleaner nature.   Solvent based carbon capture is the most matured technology for commercial deployment in natural gas-fired power plants. Read more

Integration of membranes at PACT for industrial testing with real/synthetic flue gases

A pre-pilot-scale membrane module prototype will be installed for industrial testing at the UKCCSRC PACT) Facilities, integrated with a gas turbine and a solid fuel reactor for coal/biomass to test number of fuels and operating conditions. Read more
