PhD Studentship in Quantum optics and photonics: integrated components from quantum mechanics to quantum technologies
  Dr A Politi
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Applications are invited for a postgraduate student to join a new research project in the Quantum nanoPhotonics (QnP) group at the University of Southampton.
Quantum Plasmonics: theory and simulations on the non-locality of nanoplasmonics
  Dr A Demetriadou
Application Deadline: 15 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

When light illuminates nano-sized metallic structures, the free electrons in the metal collectively oscillate, creating `plasmons’.
Theory for the Quantum Entangled states of cold atoms controlled with extreme light
  Dr A Demetriadou
Application Deadline: 15 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

When light illuminates a dielectric object, it is transmitted and reflected. By controlling the topology of such objects (for example their geometry and periodic arrangement), one can direct and concentrate light at extremely small and sub-wavelength volumes, tremendously increasing the light intensity at the same time.
  PhD Economics

Funding Type

PhD Type

OVERVIEW. The economics group is an energetic and enterprising research cluster that continuously strives for excellence in both its teaching and its scholarship.
Formation of cellular organelles by nonequilibrium phase separation
Research Group: Institute of Cell Biology
  Prof A Goryachev
Application Deadline: 5 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

A project in computational modelling of biogenesis of cellular organelles based on the principle of liquid-liquid phase separation is available in the group of Professor Andrew Goryachev (goryachev.ed.ac.uk).
PhD Studentships and Taught Masters in Physics and Astronomy

PhD Type

The University of Glasgow is a world leading institution and was the first UK university to be rated as 5 Stars Plus overall (QS World University Rankings 2015).
Photophysics and photochemistry of “non-natural” DNA building blocks
  Dr C E Dessent
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Over the last decade, a number of alternative nucleobase units have been developed that have allowed expansion of the genetic alphabet.1 For some of these…
Improving language skills in children with hearing loss by developing a parent-delivered training programme based on Theory-of-Mind skills
Dr A Heinrich, Dr H Chilton, Dr C Adams
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Hearing loss is the most prevalent sensory deficit experienced by children. In the UK alone, more than 45000 children have a hearing loss.
  Theory of Molecular Scale Thermoelectricity
  Dr H Sadeghi
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Start date. 30 September 2019 or 6 January 2020. This PhD project aims to exploit room temperature quantum and phonon interference in nanoscale junctions to design high-efficiency thermoelectric materials and devices for converting waste heat in consumer electronics and server farms into electricity.
  Operator algebras
  Dr M Pugh
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

A group acting outerly on a hyperfinite II1 factor can be recovered from the inclusion of its fixed point algebra. A general subfactor encodes a more sophisticated symmetry, including but going beyond quantum groups.
