The ecology of lightning strikes: How many trees in tropical forests are killed by lightning?
Dr T Hill, Dr L Rowland, Dr TR Feldpausch
Application Deadline: 7 January 2019
Location. University of Exeter, Streatham Campus, Exeter EX4 4QJ. Main Information. This project is one of a number that are in competition for funding from the NERC Great Western Four+ Doctoral Training Partnership (GW4+ DTP).
Enhancement of electrical conductivity of carbon fibre composite for resisting lightening strike on aircrafts
Dr H Hadavinia, Prof T Zhang, Prof D Wertheim, Dr A Curley
Applications accepted all year round
In the structure of new advanced civil aircrafts the main fuselage structures are being redesigned to use carbon fibre-reinforced composites (CFRP) mainly due to their lightweight, high specific stiffness and strength.
Investigating the Ionosphere and Magnetosphere with induction coil magnetometer data
Prof T Yeoman, Dr D Wright
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
In June 2012, the BGS Geomagnetism team installed two high frequency (100 Hz sampling rate) induction coil magnetometers at Eskdalemuir, in the Scottish Borders, which permit us to measure the very rapid changes of the magnetic field.
Voltage uprating for more-electric and hybrid aircraft
Dr D Clark, Prof M Haddad
Application Deadline: 31 December 2018
Decarbonisation of the transport sector is a major priority, both nationally and globally. It is estimated that the domestic and international aviation sectors constitute 2% of the global CO2 emissions arising from human activity.
Extreme Convective Storms: Tornadoes, Strong Winds, Heavy Rain, and Hail
  Research Group: Atmospheric Science
  Prof D Schultz, Prof G Vaughan, Dr L Garcia-Carreras
Application Deadline: 6 February 2019
Convection is ubiquitous in the atmosphere. Although the ingredients of deep moist convection are well known (lift, instability, and moisture), how those ingredients come together to produce the observed panoply of convective storms worldwide remains an active area of research.
Modelling cloud break-up in Cold-Air Outbreaks to improve weather forecast models in our changing climate
  Research Group: Atmospheric Science
Prof T Choularton, Dr P Connolly, Dr G Lloyd, Prof M Gallagher
Application Deadline: 6 February 2019
Cold-air outbreak (CAO) events in the mid-latitudes draw cold polar or continental air masses over a relatively warm ocean, resulting in a rapid increase in the surface fluxes of heat and moisture from the sea surface and the subsequent development of extensive boundary layer clouds.
Low-temperature plasma nitrogen fixation for agricultural applications
  Dr D O'Connell
Applications accepted all year round
This collaborative inter-disciplinary PhD project involves innovative research at the interface of physics, environment, chemistry and biology.
