MRC DiMeN Doctoral Training Partnership: Development of advanced MRI methods for measurement of pulmonary structural and functional change associated with lung disease
Dr P Thelwall, Prof A Blamire
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
We are developing MRI-based methods to image lung ventilation and perfusion properties. These new methods provide quantitative measures of lung function in a non-invasive and radiation-free scan, and the overall goal of our research is to develop these technologies for use in clinical practice.
Development of Gene Therapy and Gene Editing for Lung Disorders: the translation of new gene therapies to the clinic, including the development of new vectors, and evaluation in animal models of disease.
Dr D Gill, Dr S Hyde
Application Deadline: 11 January 2019
The Gene Medicine Research Group is based in the John Radcliffe Hospital and is focused on the development of new gene therapeutics for lung diesases.
Translational Lung Immunology: Studying the contribution of the immune system to lung injury, repair and fibrosis
Dr L Ho, Dr L Denny
Application Deadline: 11 January 2019
We work on the mechanisms of lung injury, repair and fibrosis, with a particular focus on how monocytes and macrophages influence these processes.
MRC Precision Medicine DTP: Estrogenic profiling in lung in Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension by Mass Spectrometry Imaging
Research Group: Centre for Cardiovascular Science
Prof R Andrew, Prof M MacLean
Application Deadline: 7 January 2019
Background. Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) is a progressive and deadly disease leading to right heart failure, lacking effective treatment.
Characterisation of human lung tissue for mechanisms of fibrosis and evaluating novel treatments/fibrosis reversal strategies.
  Dr L Smyth
Applications accepted all year round
This project uses primary human lung tissue sourced via informed consent from patients receiving clinical care in the NHS for lung disease.
Open PhD positions - IMPRS for Heart and Lung Research
Open PhD positions - IMPRS for Heart and Lung Research. PhD Studies in the Heart of Europe. The International Max Planck Research School for Heart and Lung Research (IMPRS-HLR) offers up to ten positions to talented and enthusiastic students holding a relevant Master‘s degree.
Regional humoral immunity in the lung; exploring the function and biology of resident memory B cells in resistance against influenza virus
Dr T Arnon, Prof I Udalova
Application Deadline: 11 January 2019
Influenza virus is a common airborne pathogen that continues to present a significant medical challenge causing over 3 million cases of critical illness and up to 500,000 deaths per annum.
Carbonic anhydrases as a molecular target to destroy the therapy resistant cancer stem cells in small cell lung cancer (RDF19/HLS/AS/GIELING)
  Dr R Gieling
Application Deadline: 25 January 2019
Cancer treatment is often compromised by populations of cells which are resistant to the therapy. These cells possess stemness properties and are therefore often regarded to be the cancer stem cells (CSCs).
MRC DiMeN Doctoral Training Partnership: Boosting immunity in chronic lung disease and antimicrobial resistant infection via the IL-33-ST2 axis
Dr S Johnston, Prof S Renshaw, Dr A Humbles
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
Macrophages are effector cells that directly kill microbes and regulatory cells that coordinate the wider immune response. Due to the complex nature of macrophage function, how their different roles are integrated during infection and inflammation is still poorly understood.
