The nanoscale organisation of immune cell surfaces in health and disease
  Prof D Davis
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Super-resolution microscopes, celebrated in the 2014 Nobel Prize for Chemistry, are one of the tools that allow us to study immune cells in unprecedented detail.
(MRC DTP) Building the human endometrium in vitro: The role of macrophages in receptive and decidual endometrium to optimise reproductive health
Dr E Mann, Dr Peter Ruane, Prof J Aplin, Dr L Mohiyiddeen
Application Deadline: 15 November 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

The human endometrium is a highly dynamic tissue that rapidly generates over ~20 days and differentiates to form a uterus lining receptive to embryo implantation, further transforming into decidua to support embryonic development, or breaking down before regenerating a few days later.

The ‘GW4 BioMed MRC DTP’ is awarding up to 18 studentships with an October 2020 start date, aligned with the themes of Infection, Immunity and Repair; Neuroscience and Mental Health; and Population Health.
(MRC DTP) Using super-resolution microscopy to understand immune cell inhibitory receptors and develop novel immune therapies
Prof D Davis, Dr J Honeychurch
Application Deadline: 15 November 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

Super-resolution microscopy allows us to study immune cell activity in unprecedented detail. Recently, Davis’s research team has used these microscopes to study the changing arrangements of molecules on the surface of immune cells as they survey other cells for signs of disease.
Targeting cannabinoids to the gut-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) for improved treatment of autoimmune diseases
  Dr P Gershkovich
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Autoimmune diseases are conditions that are triggered by the immune system initiating an attack on the body’s own molecules. The causes of such attacks in most cases are unknown, but a number of studies suggest that they are associated with factors such as genetics, infections and environment.
