Oral microflora in patients with Type 2 diabetes and their response to oral formulations targeting periodontal complications
Dr S Saad, Prof A Varadi
Application Deadline: 24 April 2019
This exciting PhD opportunity is in partnership with the American worldwide consumer product company Colgate-Palmolive, in an emerging R&D area of developing oral formulations for individuals with diabetes.
Do Altered host-microbial interactions promote oral inflammation during ageing?
Dr J Konkel, Prof A McBain
Applications accepted all year round
As we age, the systems of our bodies become less able to function; rendering people increasingly infirm. Ageing affects our immune system, impeding our ability to both fight infection and maintain tolerance.
  Advanced dental plaque biofilm modelling
Prof SM Higham, Dr AC Darby
Application Deadline: 31 May 2019
The oral cavity is highly populated with bacterial species, and around 700 oral bacterial species have been identified. Dental plaque is related to the aetiology of two of the most prevalent disease.
Modelling of Oral Neutrophil Epithelial interactions
  Dr E Hagi-Pavli
Applications accepted all year round
Background and Clinical Significance. Neutrophils are an important and vital cellular component of the innate immune system providing rapid protection against microbial invasion.
Predicting the development of oral cancer
  Dr C Darido
Applications accepted all year round
Human head and neck cancer is a devastating disease with poor survival rates.
Oral delivery of insulin for diabetes therapy: Development and evaluation of insulin loaded polymer/lipid based carrier systems
  Dr A Vangala
Applications accepted all year round
Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder that affects nearly 500 million people worldwide. Its hallmark feature, hyperglycaemia is caused due to insulin deficiency and/or resistance.
Detecting and Imaging oral blood vessels for disease monitoring using Heart-Rate Modulated Optical Coherence Tomography
  Dr P H Tomlins
Applications accepted all year round
Background. This project offers an exciting opportunity to develop imaging technology for oral inflammation. Inflammation is an important condition underlying numerous human health conditions.
Antibiotic Photo Disinfection for Oral health
Prof PR Cooper, Dr M Milward
Applications accepted all year round
Oral diseases are the fourth most expensive diseases to treat globally (WHO, 2005), so developing new therapeutic management strategies to address these unmet needs in our population offers considerable public health benefit as well as potential for new product development.
Investigation into the potential of using different delivery systems of cultured oral keratinocytes as a possible treatment for mucosal defects
Prof PR Cooper, Dr R M Shelton
Applications accepted all year round
The overall aim of the project is to investigate the possibility of being able to remove a small biopsy of a patients oral mucosa from a suitable site, expand the numbers of keratinocytes in culture, before seeding these cells onto a suitable delivery system and reimplanting into the patient over their mucosal defect.
Iontophoresis to deliver corticosteroids across buccal mucosal using hydrogel as delivery systems
  Prof M Patel, Dr E Hagi-Pavli
Applications accepted all year round
Background. Topical delivery of drugs to treat oral mucosal disease is often challenging. This is due to, for example, the saliva washing therapeutic agents away into the gastrointestinal system, the movement of oral structures during mastication and the presence of keratinized oral mucosal surfaces.
