PhD Studentship Opportunity in Feasibility Study of Organic Semiconducting crystals for dosimetry in Radiotherapy and radioprotection applications
Dr P Sellin, Prof M Petasecca
Application Deadline: 3 April 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

This joint UK-Australia project will develop new radiation sensors using novel organic single crystals. Students will spend half their time at the University of Surrey in the UK, and half their time in Australia at the University of Wollongong, close to Sydney.
Mapping the radiation tolerance and local mechanics of nuclear Reactor Pressure Vessel steels
  Research Group: Metallurgy and Corrosion
  Dr E Jimenez-Melero, Prof G Burke
Application Deadline: 30 April 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

The aim of the project is to evaluate the impact of the local microstructure on the radiation damage and mechanical performance of neutron-irradiated Reactor Pressure Vessels (RPV) steels at relevant reactor conditions and in the bulk microstructure, with sufficient spatial resolution and chemical sensitivity to identify local changes in chemistry, phases, microstructure and plasticity/hardening.
Design, development and implementation of an in-orbit laboratory based on reconfigurable hardware, on board of a small satellite, for the test and characterization of complex digital circuits
  Prof J A Maestro
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Research topic. The objective of this research project is to design and implement an in-orbit lab for a small satellite, whose goal will be to test complex digital circuits.
Analysis of the role of Hypoxia Inducibe Factor pathway in radioprotection
  Dr F Van Eeden
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Hypoxia inducible factor (HIF) is highly important in human health and disease, as is testified by the 2019 Nobel prize for Medicine or Physiology.
PhD Studentship Opportunity in High temperature materials research for antenna applications
  Prof J F Watts, Dr A Viquerat
Application Deadline: 30 September 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

This project is concerned with the development of coatings for the protection of materials, used by Cobham Aerospace Connectivity, in the manufacture of their antenna systems.
DMFT and GW meet THz spectroscopy: ultra-fast THz pump-probe spectroscopy and many-body physics, a joint UK-Switzerland-China collaboration
  Dr C Weber
Application Deadline: 30 July 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

The terahertz (THz) region of the electromagnetic spectrum, referring roughly to the frequencies from 100 GHz or 0.1 THz to 30 THz is the bridge between the microwave and infrared spectral bands.
Understanding of the Chemical Effects on Oxidation Behaviour of Accident Tolerant Materials for Plasma Facing Component (PFC)
  Research Group: Metallurgy and Corrosion
Dr E Prestat, Prof G Burke
Application Deadline: 30 April 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Conditions inside fusion reactors are exceptionally hostile, involving both high temperatures and severe levels of neutron irradiation.
PhD Studentship Opportunity in High temperature materials research for antenna applications
  Prof J F Watts, Dr A Viquerat
Applications accepted all year round
