Enhancing the performance, condition, safety and reliability of offshore wind energy infrastructure systems using optimal design, inspections, structural health monitoring and structural control
Dr P Omenzetter, Dr P Dunning, Dr S Sriramula, Dr Amir Siddiq
Applications accepted all year round
Wind turbines are exposed to frequent structural damage increasing the cost of wind energy generation. To drive these costs down, this project will develop new automated methods for detection of structural damage to wind turbines by examining vibration responses measured by sensors attached to the structure.
Learning from failures in the health sector: Towards a high organisation reliability status
Prof A Labib, Prof G Blunn, Dr M Barbati
Application Deadline: 17 February 2019
Applications are invited for a fully-funded three year PhD to commence in October 2019. The PhD will be based in the Faculty of Business and Law, and will be supervised by Professor Ashraf Labib, Professor Gordon Blunn and Dr Maria Barbati.
Guaranteeing Reliability for IoT Edge Computing Systems
  Dr V Pavlidis
Applications accepted all year round
Typical IoT Edge devices collect data from several sensors and may also control several actuators depending on the target application.
PhD Studentship (Sponsored by Lloyds Register Foundation) - Structural Longevity for advanced marine vehicles in extreme environments
Dr S Soua, Mr P Jamshidi, Ms S Walker
Applications accepted all year round
Background. To ensure safety of any engineering system so that human life is protected and the environment is safe it is logical to be able to define when it is operating outside of its design condition.
Highly Efficient Integration of Lithium Batteries to Improve Reliability and Power Density of WBG-based Medium Voltage Direct Current Converters
Prof N Jenkins, Dr W Ming
Application Deadline: 31 May 2019
Emerging wide bandgap semiconductors (WBG) offer an opportunity to significantly improve the performance of power electronics converters by increasing switching frequency and reducing losses.
Doctor of Engineering (EngD): Miniaturised high-reliability lasers for Quantum Technologies (Optocap)
  Prof D Reid
Applications accepted all year round
Project not available to non UK/EU applicants. The EngD is an alternative to a traditional PhD aimed at students wanting a career in industry.
Industrial PhD Studentship in Exploiting High-Speed Finite Element Models to Quantify Reliability in Non-destructive Evaluation
  Dr P Huthwaite
Applications accepted all year round
Applications are invited for a research studentship in the field of advanced non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques leading to the award of a PhD degree.
Assessing and improving the reliability of memory evidence from children
Dr M. Colloff, Dr H Flowe
Applications accepted all year round
Last year, 1 in 10 children were victims of crime (ONS, 2018). The number of children contributing memory evidence by providing police statements and courtroom testimony has increased by 60% according to the most recently available data (2006-2009; Plotnikoff & Woolfson, 2011).
Doctor of Engineering (EngD): High-Reliability Materials for High-Intensity Laser Applications (UnikLasers)
  Prof D Reid
Applications accepted all year round
Selection and recruitment to this project will be conducted in parallel with our other projects being advertised with UnikLasers.
Battery design for performance, reliability, cost and recyclability
Prof D Greenwood, Dr J Low, Mr M Ellis
Applications accepted all year round
