Experimental study on the dynamic properties of spider webs
Dr J Chen, Prof S Garrett
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
Spider web is a remarkable structure in nature; ultra-light but very strong. Up to now, the comprehensive effect of silk material properties, viscous silk joints and web lattice structure on the vibration characteristics of the webs has not been exploited yet.
New bonding technology of composites, inspired by the silk joints of spider webs
Dr J Chen, Prof S Garrett
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
Airbus is now trying to design a new composite material and structure for the future aircraft frame by using synthetic silk biopolymers (https://www.airbus.com/innovation/Strong-as-a-spider-web.html).
Evolution of inbreeding mating systems in social species: theory on causes and consequences.
Dr G Bocedi, Dr J Reid, Prof T Bilde
Application Deadline: 1 February 2019
This project aims at developing new spatially- and genetically-explicit theory to understand (1) evolution of inbreeding mating systems and associated sociality, and (2) its consequences for species adaptation to changing environments and evolutionary potential.
Phytophagous Mite Control in Raspberry: Integrating Top-Down and Bottom-Up Approaches
Dr A Karley, Dr S MacFarlane, Prof T Bruce
Application Deadline: 4 January 2019
Phytophagous mites are major agricultural pests in annual, perennial and horticultural crops. In UK raspberry plantations, two mite species are particularly problematic, causing foliar damage, fruit malformation and yield loss.
