Identifying string logics for query languages
Dr D Freydenberger, Dr D Reidenbach
Application Deadline: 15 February 2019
Loughborough University is a top-ten rated university in England for research intensity (REF2014). In choosing Loughborough for your research, you’ll work alongside academics who are leaders in their field.
DTC PHYS 3 - String Theory and Field Theory Strong-Weak Dualities
  Prof A Armoni
Applications accepted all year round
In order to study the strong coupling regime of QCD (Quantum Chromodynamics) it is useful to use strong-weak dualities. By embedding the field theory in string theory it is possible to gain a better understanding of the gauge theory dynamics.
DTC PHYS 4 - Scattering Amplitudes in Field Theory and String Theory
  Prof A Armoni
Applications accepted all year round
Calculating proton scattering amplitudes for processes observed at the LHC is a hard and pressing problem. In a certain kinematic regime, string theory can be used to study the dynamics of the proton.
PhD studentships available at the School of Physics and Astronomy at Queen Mary University of London.
The School of Physics and Astronomy has a reputation for excellence in both research and teaching. Each of the four research groups has dedicated resources, attracting funding from a variety of sources, including 3 prestigious ERC grants.
Calabi-Yau manifolds: families, fibrations, and degenerations
Dr A Thompson, Dr H Ahmadinezhad
Application Deadline: 15 February 2019
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Loughborough University seeks a qualified candidate for a PhD studentship in algebraic geometry.
Development of a parallel algorithm for the efficient compression of noisy electron cryo-microscopy micrographs of biological specimens
Dr J Agirre, Dr K D Cowtan, Dr R Calinescu
Application Deadline: 9 January 2019
Imaging biological samples with an electron cryo-microscope (cryoEM) produces datasets that can be as much as 10 times bigger than an average desktop computer’s whole disk.
Investigating the Properties of Variations in Pattern Languages
Dr D Reidenbach, Dr D Freydenberger
Application Deadline: 15 February 2019
This fully funded PhD project deals with combinatorial and algorithmic properties of so-called pattern languages and their variations.
PhD Studentship in Applied Mathematics - The Early Universe as a Hologram
  Dr P McFadden
Application Deadline: 31 January 2019
Number of awards. 1. Start date and duration. September 2019 for 3.5 years. Overview. Research in string theory has shown that gravity is holographic.
DTC PHYS 20 - Symmetries, Duality, Integrability or Chaos - exploring the interplay between symmetries, dualities and the concepts of integrability or chaos in different quantum field theories
  Prof C Nunez
Applications accepted all year round
Many systems and problems of Mathematical Physics present symmetries. A good use of these symmetries leads to interesting insights, or a solution of the problem.
  Quantum simulations with Bose-Einstein Condensates
  Dr G Barontini
Applications accepted all year round
We use modern techniques of laser cooling and magnetic and optical trapping to reach the lowest temperatures in the universe – just a few billionths of a degree above absolute zero – in very dilute atomic samples.
