Social Norms Approach Study: examining the effects of normative constructs as well as outcome expectancies on adolescent alcohol use
  Dr A Brown
Applications accepted all year round
Despite growing evidence of the negative health effects of alcohol use, many adolescents engage in underage drinking, and binge drinking, in particular (Fuller-Thomson et al., 2013; Bewick et al., 2013; Dieterich et al., 2013).
Breaking Free with Artificial Intelligence: The Data Science of Digital Behaviour Intervention.
  Dr C Yau
Application Deadline: 22 January 2019
Using digital technology to improve health and care is now a priority focus for the UK National Health Service. New and maturing technological developments hold the potential to have a transformative effect on health service delivery.
Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy for subsea applications
Dr T Thevar, Prof J Watson
Applications accepted all year round
Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is a widely used technique to obtain the elemental constituents of a sample. The process uses a short pulse of focused laser light to evaporate a minute volume of a target substance by highly localized heating to temperatures greater than 5000 K.
Development of new nano-absorptive materials for air filtration and self-cleaning coatings in closed environment (Advert Reference: RDF19/EE/MCE/QIAN)
  Dr Zi Qian
Application Deadline: 25 January 2019
The number of metro commuters has continuously increased over recent years in metropolitan cities such as London. The air quality and thermal comfort in the subway indoor environment is of particular public concern.
River temperature under change: understanding potential of riparian forest and landscape properties for climate adaptation
  Prof D M Hannah, Prof S Krause
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
Background. It is expected that climate change will impact UK river ecosystems (Hannah & Garner, 2015) as a consequence of extreme low-flows and high river water temperature events (Garner et al., 2017a).
The fate of microplastics accumulating at groundwater-surface water interfaces
Prof S Krause, Dr I Lynch, Prof G Sambrook Smith
Application Deadline: 21 January 2019
The transport, fate and behaviour of MPs have been studied predominantly in marine ecosystems, with severe knowledge gaps remaining in freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems (Klein et al., 2015; Wagner et al., 2014; Windsor et al., 2018).
Terahertz Sensing with Trapped Electromagnetic Fields
  Dr S Hanham
Applications accepted all year round
The photon energies in the terahertz frequency band (0.1 to 10 THz) corresponds to the rotational and vibrational modes of many complex molecules, making the frequency range of interest for many biological and security sensing applications.
Early life adversity and cardiovascular and immune responses to stress
  Dr A C Phillips
Applications accepted all year round
This project can be offered either on a full-time or a part-time basis. Please email the prospective supervisor for more details.
Developing Multi-Modal Neuroimaging Biomarkers for the Detection of Early-Stage Psychosis
  Dr P Uhlhaas, Prof R Murray-Smith
Application Deadline: 11 January 2019
The project will develop new predictive algorithms for mental health outcomes in young people at high-risk for Schizophrenia (ScZ) that will synthesize expertise from cognitive neuroimaging, clinical psychology and data-analytics.
Development of molecularly imprinted polymer nanoparticles (nanoMIPs) specific for anti-AAV antibodies, their characterisation and application
  Dr E Piletska
Application Deadline: 17 January 2019
The studentship aims at addressing the issue of pre-existing humoral immunity to Adeno-Associated Viruses (AAV), which is frequently found in humans, and prevents treatment with AAV vectors.
