PhD project: Hydrogen and carbon dioxide storage and transport for net-zero industrial clusters

Research Group: CDT in Green Industrial Futures
This project focuses on establishing reliable, cost-effective, large hydrogen or carbon dioxide storage and distribution hubs. In collaboration with industrial partners, we aim to identify and reduce the hurdles for geological storage of hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Read more

Application of Linear-Scaling Quantum Mechanics Methods to Hydrogen Transport Through Complex Materials

Supervisory Team. Chris-Kriton Skylaris (80%) Jeremy Frey (20%). Project Description. The computational simulation of chemical reactions in materials requires an accurate, explicit description of their electrons. Read more

Environmental sustainability challenges for the air transport industry

Aviation may be economically and socially sustainable but faces real environmental challenges. Globally, emissions from air travel need to be addressed in line with climate change advice from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Read more

Climate resilience and sustainability of large portfolios of transport systems by leveraging openly available data

With unprecedented frequency, there is an increase in critical infrastructure failures as a result of climate stressors. Nevertheless, infrastructure adaptation to the changing climate is slow-not proofing our assets to future hazards. Read more

Modelling charged-particle transport and heating in fusion plasmas

The project will investigate a very important aspect of inertial confinement fusion. the internal heating by fusion products. Recently, inertial confinement fusion has made considerable progress reaching the stage of substantial internal heating and later positive energy outcome (ignition) in several experiments. Read more

Experimental study of ion transport in subsurface media for renewable energy storage

These projects are open to students worldwide, but have no funding attached. Therefore, the successful applicant will be expected to fund tuition fees at the relevant level (home or international) and any applicable additional research costs. Read more

Accelerated Inorganic Materials Discovery Driven by Magnetic Resonance

This studentship will explore experimental and computational Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy approaches to probe the fast oxide ion transport (e.g., self-diffusion coefficients, diffusion pathways, dimensionality of motion) of oxide in inorganic materials aimed at establishing design rules for the discovery of next generation fast conductors.
