PhD Studentship in optical metrology for next generation digital aircraft wing manufacture
  Prof S Robson
Application Deadline: 31 January 2019
Applications are invited for a fully funded 4-year PhD studentship covering UK fees and stipend /EU fees only, as part of an EPSRC CASE PhD studentship.
Rolls-Royce sponsored PhD scholarship – Computer vision and robot control for performing on-wing repair of aero-engines
  Prof D Axinte
Application Deadline: 31 August 2019
Applicants are invited to undertake a 3 ½ year PhD programme in partnership with industry to address key challenges in on-platform manufacturing engineering.
Rolls-Royce sponsored PhD Scholarship – Design and Simulation of Stiffness-Adjustable Robotic Systems for Performing on-Wing Repair of Aero-Engines
  Prof D Axinte
Application Deadline: 8 March 2019
Applicants are invited to undertake a 3 year PhD programme in partnership with industry to address key challenges in on-platform manufacturing engineering.
  Aircraft flutter suppression using plasma
  Dr W Wang
Applications accepted all year round
Aircrafts can be lighter when composites are using. The structure would become more ‘flexible’, particularly for the wings. To prevent catastrophic structural failure from resonance coupled with aerodynamic loads, prevention and suppression of flutter are critical to design and operate air vehicles.
Flying Trains: The Potential to Harness Ground Effect Aerodynamics for Ultra-High Speed Trains (Advert Reference: SF18/MCE/LEUNG)
Dr P S (Ken) Leung, Prof R Dominy
Applications accepted all year round
The ’Flying Train’ concept uses ground effect aerodynamics to provide a transport system with the convenience and capacity of rail but at near-flight velocities.
Quasi-3D beam models for the nonlinear aeroelastic response of metallic and composite structures
Dr F Fazzolari, Dr S Fichera
Application Deadline: 10 August 2019
This PhD project will focus on developing a quasi-3D beam models tailored to nonlinear aeroelastic systems that will be coupled to the aeroelastic suite of Nastran for extending its aeroelastic capabilities.
Modelling the Fluid-Structure Interaction of membranes with anisotropic material properties to provide performance improvements
Dr J Knight, Dr J Buick, Dr H Dhakal
Application Deadline: 17 February 2019
Applications are invited for a fully-funded three year PhD to commence in October 2019. The PhD will be based in the School of Mechanical and Design Engineering and will be supervised by Dr Jason Knight, Dr James Buick and Dr Hom Dhakal.
Trade-offs between pollinator community richness and honey production in upland semi-natural habitats.
Dr D Burslem, Prof R Van Der Wal
Applications accepted all year round
The pollination services provided by bees and other insects are vital to persistence of Scotland’s semi-natural habitats, and they sustain important rural industries including production of crops, soft fruits and honey.
Aerospace Engineering: College of Engineering Centenary Scholarship: Active Control methods in Nonlinear Aeroelasticity
  Dr S Jiffri
Application Deadline: 31 January 2019
Subject areas. Aerospace Engineering, Control. Start date. April 2019. Project description.
