How regulatory immunological cues (re)programme cellular metabolism to control effector T cell behaviour and function
  Dr K Couper, Prof R K Grencis
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Upon activation a T cell transitions from a state of semi-quiescence to a state of high activity. During the process of activation the T cell therefore needs to up regulate metabolic pathways to acquire the energy and nutrients required to facilitate the behavioural changes associated with its new functional state.
Characterising B cells in Rheumatoid Arthritis: Their role in susceptibility, pathogenesis, and treatment response
Dr S Viatte, Dr Gemma Radley, Prof A Barton
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Background. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease that primarily affects the joints. In the UK, some patients who fail to respond to methotrexate (MTX) and TNF inhibitors (TNFi) are started on rituximab, and 20% will experience a favourable clinical response.
Immune phenotyping of refractory rheumatoid arthritis disease
Prof Maya Buch, Dr S Viatte
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been transformed with the introduction of targeted therapies twenty years ago (comprising biologic disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, bDMARDS; and the more recent small molecule JAK inhibitors).
New approaches to treating metastatic bone disease in breast and prostate cancer
Dr A Riemen, Prof V Speirs, Prof A Johnstone
Application Deadline: 17 February 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Bone is a common metastatic site for breast and prostate cancers. Once metastasised to bones, one-year survival for prostate cancer is 29% (4) compared with 59% for breast cancer.
The phenotypic and functional identification of angiogenic T-cells for potential use to treat cardiovascular disease Project ID SAS0043

PROJECT DESCRIPTION. This project is based within the School of Applied Sciences at Edinburgh Napier University and is led by Dr.
Regulation of intestinal immune responses to commensal bacteria by innate lymphoid cells
Dr M Hepworth, Prof K Else
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Commensal bacteria present in the gastrointestinal tract provide beneficial roles for the host, such as supporting nutrient metabolism.
The contribution of human mast cells to innate functional memory in anti-bacterial responses
  Prof S Bulfone-Paus, Dr J Cavet
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

In the recent years, it has become evident that after infection or vaccination innate immune cells have the capacity to adapt and modify the nature of their activities following a single immunostimulatory challenge and display a long-term functional memory.
