heat transfer PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships

We have 38 heat transfer PhD Projects, Programmes & Scholarships

Convective heat-transfer in turbulent boundary layers

Supervisory Team.   Bharathram Ganapathisubramani and Sean Symon. Project description. The electrification of aircraft as an enabler for achieving our Net-Zero ambitions has been increasingly studied in recent years. Read more

Electronically Controlled Adaptive AM Heat Exchanger (eHEX)

Electronically Controlled Adaptive AM Heat Exchanger (eHEX). The Postgraduate Research Programme Innovation in Digital Manufacturing and Design (IDMD) offers 12 PhD research scholarships in 12 separate projects to commence in 2024. Read more

Multiscale investigation of corrosion deposition in high temperature high pressure water for nuclear power plants

We are pleased to present an exciting PhD opportunity in collaboration with Rolls-Royce, providing a unique chance for candidates to participate in a multiscale investigation of corrosion deposition in high-temperature, high-pressure water for nuclear power plants. Read more

EPSRC supported EngD. Advancing modular computational fluid modelling techniques to aid the rapid development and scale-up of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies

In a world facing climate crisis, it is vital to develop new ways to mitigate climate change. This project, funded by Origen Carbon Solutions, focuses on the modelling and optimisation of innovative Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Direct Air Capture (DAC) technologies. Read more

Low carbon hybrid timber-steel structures in fire

The built environment is one of the largest producers of carbon emissions, responsible for around 38% of global emissions. Hybrid timber-steel structures utilise a traditional steel frame but use Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) for floor slabs which have the potential to reduce embodied carbon in the built environment. Sustainable Heating and Cooling Technologies

The project. The Sustainable Thermal Energy Technologies (STET) research group in the School of Engineering has a PhD scholarship opportunity in the area of thermal energy. Read more

Modelling and simulation of heat exchanger with strong dependence of oil viscosity on temperature

The heating of oil and oil products is widely used to reduce energy losses during transportation. An approach will be developed to determine the effective length of the heat exchanger and the temperature of the cold coolant (oil) at its outlet in the case of a strong dependence of oil viscosity on temperature. Biocoal research for use in heritage steam railways

The UK has over 200 heritage railway lines in operation. Traditionally these have run on coal, preferably Welsh steam coal, a form of bituminous coal known for its good calorific values, low sulphur content and semi smokeless properties. Read more
