EASTBIO - Dinoflagellate parasite strategies for success: synchronisation with host (Norway lobster) seasonality and metabolic adaptations

Hematodinium sp. is a dinoflagellate parasite that, from a host range perspective, is a generalist, infecting a variety of wild and commercially very valuable crustacean species (Davies et al., 2019; Wang et al., 2017). Parasites use different life cycle and metabolic adaptations to achieve efficient transmission. Understanding the biological mechanisms underpinning the virulence of Varroa destructor to the European honey bee (Apis mellifera)

Insect pollinators are necessary for the reproductive success of 88% of flowering plants globally. Managed Western honey bees (Apis mellifera) offer mobile pollination services to complement wild pollinators and contribute to this ecosystem service. Read more

WR DTP fully-funded project: Developing phage therapy to reduce plant pathogen virulence

Plant pathogenic bacteria cause considerable losses to food production. This project will develop a novel biocontrol approach to reduce the virulence of plant pathogenic Ralstonia solanacearum bacterium (causative agent of bacterial wilt) using phages – viral parasites of the pathogen. Read more
