Enzymes are not only central to life but also to the growing need to harness elements of the natural world to the benefit of mankind.
The chemical glycobiology of carbohydrate metabolism
Prof R Field, Prof S Flitsch
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Carbohydrates are widespread in nature and fulfil many important biological functions. However, the biology of carbohydrates is much less well explored than that of nucleic acids and proteins.
EPSRC CASE PhD studentship: Novel high-throughput approaches for the rapid analysis of target engagement by mass spectrometry (collaboration with Medicines Discovery Catapult)

The ability to provide fast and efficient readouts for drug engagement with targets (proteins and oligonucleotides) is a key driving technology in the biopharma pipeline, e.g.
Novel applications of liquid MALDI MS for the analysis of large biomolecules
Prof R K Cramer, Dr G Brown, Prof M Morris
Application Deadline: 1 March 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

This PhD project will investigate novel applications of liquid MALDI MS in the areas of hydrogen/deuterium exchange for structural biology, native mass spectrometry, top-down biomolecule analyses and enzyme assay and kinetics measurements.
Molecular analysis of the dynamic sulfotyrosine proteome
  Prof C E Eyers, Prof P Eyers, Dr A R Jones
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

The survival of an organism depends upon the ability of different cell types to communicate with each other by assembling the correct complexes of proteins at the correct time in the correct place.
Multi-omics investigations for enhanced understanding of NF-κB mediated drug resistance
  Prof R Goodacre, Prof N Perkins, Prof C E Eyers, Dr A R Jones
Application Deadline: 1 June 2020

We have an established system that can be used to investigate the role of NF-κB signalling in the cancer cell response to DNA replication stress and have generated cell lines which are resistant to treatment with a highly selective and specific CHK1 inhibitor (CCT244747).
Development of metabolomics for understanding AMR in mixed infections
  Prof R Goodacre
Applications accepted all year round

PhD Type

Without correct antibiotic stewardship we could be cast back to a pre-infective era where we have run out of antibiotics to treat life-threatening infections.
Understanding and dissecting microbial communities with Raman spectroscopy
  Prof R Goodacre
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

We have shown that it is possible to label bacteria with heavy isotopes of carbon (13C) and nitrogen (15N) and this incorporation within cellular biomass of heavy isotopes has led to significant shifts in certain vibrational modes from amino acids and nucleic acids that can be readily detected with Raman spectroscopy.
Differential ion mobility spectrometry and mass spectrometry for proteomics
  Prof H J Cooper
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type
