Design and Manufacture of Broadband 3D Multilayer Metamaterials for Microwave and mm-wave Application
  Prof A P Hibbins, Prof J R Sambles
Application Deadline: 31 December 2019

Funding Type

PhD Type

Joint supervisors. Prof Alastair P Hibbins, Prof J Roy Sambles. External partner. John Davies (Thales). ***. Project objective. To develop broadband metamaterial designs for antenna and radome applications using additive manufacturing techniques.
Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy for subsea applications
Dr T Thevar, Dr K Nakkeeran
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) is a widely used technique to obtain the elemental constituents of a sample. The process uses a short pulse of focused laser light to evaporate a minute volume of a target substance by highly localized heating to temperatures greater than 5000 K.
Non-invasive Mapping of Oxygen Extraction Fraction in Patients with Breast Cancer: Development of Novel Multi-Parametric Relaxometry Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Methods
Dr J He, Dr Y Masannat, Prof D Lurie
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

This project aims to translate, optimise and extend quantitative oxygen extraction fraction mapping based on oxygen enriched air inspiration and magnetic resonance (MR) relaxometric imaging for human application.
PhD in Engineering focusing on solar cell and module research
  Dr M Ernst
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

Prospective students graduated or going to graduate from Electrical and Electronic, Physics, Mechanical or Mechatronic, Material or Applied Science, and Chemistry Departments, or related disciplines with a GPA above 8 out of 10, or 3.5 out of 4.0, or high distinction (HD), or equivalent are invited to apply.
The influence of biogeochemistry and microbiology on Antarctic ice shelves
Dr E Bagshaw, Dr A Jungblut, Prof I Hawes, Prof J L Wadham
Application Deadline: 6 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Project Background. Predicting the future behaviour of ice shelves is critical for understanding how Antarctica will respond to climate warming.
Novel platforms for integrated quantum devices based on rare earth doped insulating materials
  Dr M Mazzera
Applications accepted all year round

Funding Type

PhD Type

We offer a 3-year PhD position for a talented, proactive, and strongly motivated candidate who will contribute building a new setup with potential for ground breaking scientific research in the field of solid-state quantum memories for quantum communication applications.
PhD - Optimisation of interferometry-based volume holography for industrial applications (Ceres Holographics)
Prof D Reid, Prof G Turnbull
Application Deadline: 30 January 2020

Funding Type

PhD Type

Project Description. Volume holograms based on photopolymers are one of the most promising platforms to develop commercial applications of holographic optical elements at industrial level.
