PhD in Evolution and Behaviour: exploring the connection between how organisms have evolved and how they behave

The connection between how organisms have evolved and how they behave is a fundamental principle of biology. It can show us why organisms are the way they are, and answer deep questions about the diversity of life on earth. Read more

PhD in Ecology and Environment: how ecosystems, and the species they contain, respond to environmental change and how to reduce and mitigate adverse impacts

Environmental change threatens biodiversity, altering ecosystem processes and provision of ecosystem services. These environmental change pressures are accelerating due to growing human populations and accompanying climate change, land use, pollution and invasive species. Read more

NERC Panorama DTP - Climate change meets life’s crunch point – how do heatwaves affect the basic functions of life?

Using Marek's disease virus to understand the RNA world of the alphaherpesviruses

Marek’s disease virus (MDV) is a major pathogen of poultry that results in a significant economic burden worldwide. Although vaccines exist, vaccinated birds can still spread MDV and virulence evolves accordingly. Read more

ParaHox homeobox genes in chordate evo-devo.

  Research Group: Scottish Oceans Institute
This project will use a comparative approach to dissect regulatory mechanisms and functions of the chordate ParaHox genes (Gsx, Xlox/Pdx1 and Cdx), analysing regulation of these genes in the invertebrate chordates, amphioxus (Branchiostoma) and the sea squirt (Ciona intestinalis), and a vertebrate (the chicken Gallus gallus).
