Exploring DDT metabolism in Tetrahymena thermophila

Studies of pesticide contaminated water sites have revealed the ability of Tetrahymena thermophila to metabolise Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) with knockdown studies and microarray data suggesting a number of enzymes responsible for this metabolism; these enzymes will be the focus of this PhD project. Polmorphisms in cytosolic drug metabolising enzymes: a combined proteomics and modelling approach to clinical impact

Cytosolic drug metabolising enzymes such as aldehyde oxidase play a pivotal role in metabolism of drugs. However, research into cytosolic enzymes has been relatively neglected in comparison with membrane bound enzymes such as cytochrome P450 (CYP) and uridine 5’-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs). PhD Studentships in Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Optometry

Four new fully funded PhD research studentships are offered in the School of Applied Sciences for an October 2022 start. The School is made up of the Departments of Biological & Geographical Sciences Chemical Sciences, Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences and Optometry. Read more

Enhancing clinical metabolomic studies through improved laboratory and bioinformatics tools

Applications will be reviewed until a suitable candidate is appointed and funding is available. Metabolites play many important roles in humans including in metabolism of food, synthesis of proteins and DNA, in signalling and regulation of biochemical mechanisms and in the development and progression of diseases. Design, synthesis and evaluation of protease-activated anti-cancer prodrugs

Research Group: Institute of Cancer Therapeutics
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of endoproteases that are overexpressed in tumours and play crucial roles in many tumourigenic processes, not least tumour invasion and angiogenesis. Read more

Four-year PhD to assess the development of mother-offspring multi’omic “handprints” that predict child phenotypes

Strong evidence now supports a crucial role for early metabolomes in programming lifelong health. This project based in the NIHR Southampton Biomedical Research Centre provides an important opportunity to inform new interventions to promote healthy lifecourse trajectories in the next generation.
